Knights Outlast Hawks, Score First Win Of The Season

Figueroa nets career-high 25 points

Oneonta, N.Y. – Jayden Figueroa (New Windsor, N.Y.) led three players in double-figures with a career-high 25 points as the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Basketball team edged Hartwick 73-72 Monday night to pick up its first win of the season.
 
Mount Saint Mary moves to 1-5 overall on the season with the victory, while Hartwick remains winless in six outings on the young season. Monday's victory is the second straight for the Knights over the Hawks and gives them two wins in the last three meetings between the two sides.
 
First Half
  • Neither team grabbed a lead larger than eight points in the first half, with the Mount moving in front by a game-high eight points when a Figueroa triple pushed it in front 40-32 with 1:29 left before halftime.
  • Mount Saint Mary fell behind by as many as five points twice in the first period, but used a 9-0 run to regain a 29-25 advantage with 6:06 left in the half.
  • After regaining the lead, the Knights would not trail again in the first half.
  • After falling behind by eight late in the half, Hartwick scored the final four points of the period to cut the Mount's lead to 40-36 after 20 minutes of action.
  • Mount Saint Mary shot 48.4-percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes and connected on five three-pointers.
  • Hartwick shot 51.9-percent overall and went 3-for-10 from behind the arc prior to the break.
  • Figueroa blew past his pervious career-high of 10 points prior to halftime on Monday, finishing the half 7-for-7 from the floor, including a perfect 5-fofr-5 from three-point range, on his way to 19 points.
  • Cooper Francis led Hartwick with 14 points, finishing the half 6-fof-6 from the field with a pair of three-pointers.
 
Second Half
  • Mount Saint Mary came out of the break and jumped back in front by seven twice in the opening 2:04 of the second half.
  • A Figueroa free-throw pushed the Knights in front 43-36 with 18:34 left in the half and a Paul Sienke (Washington, D.C.) layup with 17:56 gave the Knights a 45-38 advantage.
  • Mount Saint Mary maintained the lead until a Nick Bantis triple pushed the Hawks in front 49-47 with 13:29 left in regulation time.
  • After the Bantis triple, the game featured five ties and seven lead changes through the end of regulation time.
  • A Connor Cyran (Garfield, N.J.) three-pointer with 4:12 left knotted the score at 64-64 and started a 9-0 run for the Knights that saw them surge in front 70-64 with 2:35 left to play.
  • Anthony Girard scored the next six points for Hartwick, including a three-point play to tie the score at 70-70 with 1:53 left in the half.
  • Figueroa split a pair of free-throws with 29 seconds left to give the Knights a slim 71-70 advantage.
  • Liam Drennan came back with two from the stripe for the Hawks to push them back in front 72-71 with 10 seconds left.
  • The final lead change came when Sienke worked his way into the lane and found an open Figueroa for a lay-in with four seconds on the clock to give the Knights the final one-point advantage.
  • Mount Saint Mary shot 48-percent from the floor after halftime and hit on half of its six three-point attempts.
  • Hartwick shot 48.1-percent after the break and went 3-for-10 again from behind the arc.
  • Chris Yearwood (Red Hook, N.Y.) and Sienke led the Knights with eight second half points apiece.
  • Drennan led all players in the second half with 10 points.
 
For The Knights
  • Figueroa reached double-figures for the second time this season with his career-high 25 points. He closed the night 9-for-11 from the floor and 5-for-6 from bonus distance. He closed out a double-double with a game-high 14 rebounds, adding two assists, three blocks and five steals.
  • Sienke scored a season-high 12 points after going 6-for-9 from the floor. He matched the team-high with four assists and added a steal and a block.
  • Yearwood reached double-figures for the sixth straight game to begin the season with 10 points, chipping in three rebounds and three assists.
  • Cyran finished the night with nine points and six caroms.
  • Mike Dedda (West Chester, Pa.) joined Sienke with four assists and added a career-high eight points on 4-for-7 shooting.
 
For The Hawks
  • Hartwick received a team-high 21 points from Francis, who finished up 9-for-10 from the floor and a perfect 3-for-3 from long distance. He grabbed three rebounds and led the team with four steals.
  • Drennan and Girard each scored 14 points for the Hawks with Girard matching the game-high with four assists.
  • Andrew Rocci came off the bench to produce 10 points and a team-high six rebounds.
 
Game Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary shot a season-high 48.2-percent from the floor, including an 8-for-20 effort from three-point range.
  • Hartwick shot an even 50-percent for the game and finished up 6-for-20 from three-point range.
  • The Knights finished the game with the advantage in second chance points 11-7, paint points 40-32, fast break points 12-10 and points off of turnovers 22-18.

  • Mount Saint Mary opens Skyline Conference play with a home game against USMMA on Wednesday.
  • Hartwick heads to Hamilton for a non-conference contest on Thursday.
