Knights Battle Past Mount Saint Vincent; Run Winning Streak To Four

Four Knights score in double-figures

Newburgh, N.Y. – Morina Bojka (Prospect, Conn.) led four players in double-figures and finished with a double-double as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team pushed its winning streak to four games with a hard fought 79-71 home win over the College of Mount Saint Vincent Tuesday night.
 
Tuesday's victory moves the Mount to 4-1 overall on the season and to 3-0 in league play while handing the Dolphins their first loss of the young season. Tuesday's win is the eighth straight for the Knights over the Dolphins and gives them 22 wins in the last 28 meetings in the series.
 
First Quarter
  • Mount Saint Mary fell behind by as many as six points in the early going, but a three-pointer from Katie Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) started an 11-0 run covering just 92 seconds that gave the Knights a 16-11 advantage.
  • The Knights went 4-for-4 from the floor over the run with Bojka scoring four points.
  • Mount Saint Mary maintained the lead from that point until a quick 8-0 run for the Dolphins over the final 2:42 of the period saw them grab a 21-18 lead after 10 minutes.
  • Mount Saint Vincent made three more field goals than the Knights in the opening stanza and shot 52.6-percent from the floor.
  • Mount Saint Mary shot better than 58-percent from the field in the first, but saw the Dolphins hold a 10-4 advantage in points off of turnovers in the quarter.
 
Second Quarter
  • Mount Saint Mary quickly tied the score to start the second period on an Erin Smith (Goshen, N.Y.) three-pointer.
  • K. Smith added a triple just under three minutes into the frame to give the Knights the lead back at 24-23.
  • Mount Saint Mary built its lead to 27-23 on a second triple from E. Smith at the 6:55 mark of the second period.
  • After the visitors grabbed a 33-32 lead, Mount Saint Mary closed the half with a 12-6 spurt to take a 44-38 lead into the intermission.
  • The Knights went 4-for-5 from the field over the final 4:03 of the period with Bojka scoring seven points over the run.
  • A Lauren Desrats (Warwick, N.Y.) three-pointer with 24 seconds left before halftime gave the Knights a half-high 44-36 advantage.
  • Mount Saint Mary outscored the Dolphins 27-16 in the quarter and shot 64.3-percent from the floor.
 
Third Quarter
  • Mount Saint Mary held the lead throughout the third period and would not let the Dolphins closer than three points.
  • Annie Keenan (Nesconset, N.Y.) hit a jumper in the opening minute of the period to push the Knights in front 46-38.
  • Asia Rivera (Saddle Brook, N.J.) added a jumper in the paint with 3:13 left in the frame to give the Knights a then game-high 54-45 advantage.
  • Mount Saint Mary cooled to 22.2-percent shooting in the third frame, but limited Mount Saint Vincent to just four field goals.
 
Fourth Quarter
  • Mount Saint Mary never surrendered the lead in the fourth period and allowed the Dolphins only as close as three points on two occasions in the quarter.
  • Mount Saint Mary spread its lead to a game-high 11 points on a Rivera conversion in the paint with 96 seconds left in regulation.
  • The Dolphins mounted one more charge, scoring six straight points to pull to within 72-67 with 44 seconds left to play.
  • The Knights went 7-for-8 from the free-throw line down to stretch to hold off the Dolphins and secure the final eight point decision.
  • Three of the Mount's five field goals in the period came from behind the arc.
  • The Knights outscored the Dolphins 12-6 from the free-throw line in the quarter.
 
For The Knights
  • Bojka scored in double-figures for the third straight game, leading the Mount with 22 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. She finished the night 6-for-18 from the floor, adding two assists and a trio of steals.
  • K. Smith scored 14 points, going 3-for-4 from three-point range, to go along with five assists and three steals.
  • Keenan reached double-figures for the first time this season with a season-high 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting, including a pair of three-pointers. She added eight rebounds to the winning effort.
  • Rivera came off the bench to go a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line on her way to matching her season-high with 10 points.
 
For The Dolphins
  • Amber Been led all players with 32 points, going 13-for-24 from the floor. She added eight rebounds an assist and two steals on the night.
  • Victoria Hanley closed a strong night with 18 points to go along with eight rebounds, a game-high six assists and a pair of steals.
  • Kira Villegas chipped in 12 points.
  • Dez Brown closed the night with nine points and a team-high nine rebounds.
 
Game Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary closed the night shooting 43.1-percent from the floor and connected on a season-high 12 three-pointers.
  • Seven different players finished the night with at least one triple and four players connected on multiple three-pointers.
  • Mount Saint Vincent shot 48.3-percent overall, but went just 3-for-14 from three-point range.
  • Mount Saint Mary outscored the visitors 17-10 from the free-throw line.
  • Mount Saint Mary held the edge in fast break points at 16-8 and bench scoring at 21-0.
  • Mount Saint Vincent controlled the paint with a 42-20 edge inside.
 
What's Next
  • The Knights step back outside of conference with a trip to Oneonta on Saturday afternoon.
  • The Dolphins head to league rival St. Joseph's-L.I. Wednesday night.
