Knights Battle Past Dolphins, Run Winning Streak To Three

Knights yet to allow a goal in conference play

Newburgh, N.Y. – Brittany Bornstad (Linden, N.J.) scored in the seventh minute and Christina Kakavas (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) posted her second shutout of the season as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team fought to a 1-0 Skyline Conference victory over the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Tuesday. The win is the third straight for the Knights and the Mount's fourth shutout in as many conference games.
 
Tuesday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 5-3-2 overall on the season and to an unbeaten 4-0-1 in league play. The Mount improves its winning streak over Mount Saint Vincent to 16 games and is outscoring the Dolphins 65-4 over that stretch.
 
First Half
  • The Dolphins got on the board early with what proved to be the game winning goal. Bornstad collected a free ball at the top of the box and rifled it home just under the bar at the 6:07 mark of the contest.
  • The Mount had four more shots right after the goal, including an attempt from Nikki Carter (Southington, Conn.) that rang the cross bar.
  • Mount Saint Mary outshot the Dolphins 10-4 in the opening period.
  • The Knights took all three corner kicks awarded in the opening period.
  • Kakavas turned aside one shot in the first half.
  • Mount Saint Vincent keeper, Kora-Lyn McCullough, finished the first period with four stops.
 
Second Half
  • Neither team would find the back of the net after halftime, but the Mount finished with a 10-2 edge in shots after the break.
  • Kakavas turn aside one more shot in the second half to keep the Dolphins off the board.
 
For The Knights
  • Bornstad potted her second goal of the season and pushed her team lead in points to eight.
  • Carter led nine different Knights with a shot with five.
  • Maggie Zecca (Mountainside, N.J.) recorded four shots.
  • Kakavas turned in her second career clean sheet with two stops. She improved her save percentage to .860 on the season and lowered her goals against average to 0.98.
  • The Knights have not allowed a goal in conference play to date, outscoring their opponents thus far 15-0.
 
For Mount Saint Vincent
  • Emily McCarthy, who entered the game with nine goals, led the team with three shots.
  • McCullough rounded out the night with seven saves.
 
Match Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary finished with a commanding 20-6 advantage in shots, including an 8-2 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Knights took all seven corner kicks in the match.
