Knights Topple Gryphons, Advance To Skyline Conference Championship Semifinal

Quinones, Stosch tally in victory

Newburgh, N.Y. – The third seeded Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team advanced to the Skyline Conference Championship Semifinal Round on Saturday following a 2-0 win over Sarah Lawrence. Raina Quinones (West Babylon, N.Y.) and Megan Stosch (North Babylon, N.Y.) provided the goals for the Knights.
 
Saturday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 10-6-2 overall on the season, while the Gryphons' season comes to a close with a 9-10 overall record.
 
First Half
  • Quinones broke the ice on Saturday with her team leading seventh goal of the season in the 20th minute. She collected a pass from Chloe Kennedy (Middletown, N.Y.) at the top of the box and scored to the lower right corner at 19:56 with the eventual game winning goal.
  • Stosch struck five minutes later with the Mount's second goal of the game, finishing off a passing play from Brittany Bornstad (Linden, N.J.) and Maggie Zecca (Mountainside, N.J.) at 24:56.
  • Mount Saint Mary outshot Sarah Lawrence 10-1 in the first half.
  • First half corner kicks went to the Knights 7-0.
  • Christina Kakavas (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) was forced to make a single save in the opening 45 minutes.
  • Sarah Lawrence keeper, Maya Pfeiffer, stopped six Mount Saint Mary attempts prior to the intermission.
 
Second Half
  • Neither team would find the scoresheet in the second half, with the Knights holding an 8-3 advantage in shots.
  • Kakavas kept the Gryphons off the board with one more save in the second half.
  • Pfeiffer closed the second period with a pair of stops.
 
For The Knights
  • Quinones moved into sole possession of the team lead in goals with her seventh of the season.
  • Quinones scored her first game winning goal of the season and moved into second place on the team in points with 15.
  • Stosch potted her third goal of the season.
  • Kennedy recorded her fourth assist of the season with the helper on the game winning goal.
  • Bornstad pushed her team lead in assists to nine and her team standard in points to 19.
  • Zecca picked up her third assist of the season and moved her point total on the year to seven.
  • Kakavas produced her fourth shutout of the year with two saves in the win. She raised her save percentage to .829 and lowered her goals against average to 0.95.
 
For The Gryphons
  • Lilly Matalus, Lynn Rech, Samantha Garcia and Cat Faville all recorded one shot.
  • Pfeiffer closed a solid day in goal with eight stops.
 
Match Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary closed the victory with an 18-4 advantage in shots, including a 10-2 edge in shots on goal.
  • Corner kicks went to the Knights by a commanding 12-0 margin.
