Women’s Soccer Plays Host To Sarah Lawrence To Open Skyline Conference Championship

Knights topped Gryphons 2-0 in regular season matchup

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team begins its quest for its first ever conference crown on Saturday when it welcomes Sarah Lawrence to Kaplan Field. The third seeded Knights and sixth seeded Gryphons are scheduled to kick-off at 12:00 p.m. with Live Stats and Video available for those unable to attend.

At A Glance: The Knights earned the third seed in the 2021 Conference Championship after posting a 9-6-2 overall record and an 8-1-1 mark against league rivals during the regular season. The Knights picked up wins in its final two regular season contests, topping Purchase 8-0 on Wednesday and Yeshiva 11-0 on Thursday.
 
Raina Quinones (West Babylon, N.Y.) and KellyAnn Platt (Staten Island, N.Y.) enter the weekend tied for the team lead in goals with six apiece after each scored twice in Thursday's win over the Maccabees. Quinones is second on the team with 13 points, while Platt is tied for third with Liz Ellsworth (Suffern, N.Y.), who has scored five goals and assisted on two others, with 12.
 
Brittany Bornstad (Linden, N.J.) paces the team with eight assists and sits atop the team leaderboard with 18 points heading into Saturday's tilt with the Gryphons. Bornstad also anchors a Mount Saint Mary defense that allowed just four goals to conference opponents in 2021.
 
Nikki Carter (Southington, Conn.) and Wendy Guerra (Newburgh, N.Y.) support the offense with four and three goals, respectively with Maggie Zecca (Mountainside, N.J.), Julia DeSantis (Islip, N.Y.), Lauren Engel (Red Hook, N.Y.), Jackie Lindsay (Baldwin, N.Y.) and Megan Stosch (North Babylon, N.Y.) all potting two goals for the Knights.
 
Christina Kakavas (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) has started 12 of the Mount's 17 games to date in goal and has played 1,141:40 of a possible 1,574:29. She holds a .824 save percentage, tops in the conference among eligible goalkeepers, and a 1.02 goals against average, which ranks second in the league. Kakavas has produced three shutouts for the Knights and made 61 saves.
 
Scouting Sarah Lawrence: The Gryphons head to Newburgh on Saturday sporting a 9-9 overall record and qualified for the championship with a 5-5 mark against conference opponents. Sarah Lawrence is coming off a 2-1 loss to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn in its regular season finale on Wednesday.
 
Lynn Rech enters the weekend as the team leader in goals with 10 and points with 24 and is one of seven players with at least 10 points on the season. Samantha Lungren, Cora Colvin and Samantha Garcia support the offense, combing for 16 goals.
 
Alexis Valdes leads the way for Sarah Lawrence with seven assists and has chipped in three goals, ranking third on the team in points with 13. Lungren is second on the squad with 17 points on the strength of six goals and five helpers.
 
The Gryphons have used four keepers throughout the regular season with Bridgette Lee playing a team-high 771:00. She has made 57 saves and is sporting a .792 save percentage and a 1.75 goals against average.
 
Regular Season Recap: The Knights traveled to Sarah Lawrence on September 29 and came away with a 2-0 victory. Bornstad and Zecca provided the goals for the Knights as the Mount outshot the Gryphons 21-7. Kakavas earned the shutout in goal with four saves.
 
Recent History: Since joining the Skyline Conference, the Knights and Gryphons have hooked up seven times, with the Mount posting victories in each meeting.
 
What's At Stake: The winner of Saturday's contest will advance to the Semifinal Round of the championship on Wednesday at second seeded Manhattanville.
