Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team begins its search for a third conference crown in the last four seasons when it hosts the United States Merchant Marine Academy in the First Round of the Skyline Conference Championship Saturday afternoon. At A Glance: The Knights closed the regular season with a 4-0 win over St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Tuesday and enter Saturday's contest at 9-6-1 overall after winning five of their final six regular season contests.
The Mount's offensive attack is led by
Connor Doyle (Ne Windsor, N.Y.) who leads the Skyline Conference in both goals with 16 and points with 32. Doyle has scored in nine of the last 11 games, including a stretch of at least one goal in eight straight games from September 22 – October 16. Doyle has scored multiple goals in four games this season, including a trio of hat tricks.
Matthew Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.) leads the Skyline Conference with 13 assists through the regular season and with two helpers in Tuesday's regular season finale set both the single season and career assist records at Mount Saint Mary. He has added five goals to his helper total and sits second on the team with 23 points.
Peter Ramirez (Newburgh, N.Y.) supports the offensive attack with four goals and 10 points with
Joseph Mesoraca (Oceanside, N.Y.) and
J.C. Lopez (East Islip, N.Y.) each scoring twice. Mesoraca enters Saturday's contest with six points, adding a pair of helpers to his goal total.
Zach Decker (Red Hook, N.Y.) has played every minute in goal for the Knights to date and begins the championship with a .755 save percentage and a 1.40 goals against average. Decker has posted six shutouts, the second highest total in the league, and has stopped 71 shots.
Previewing USMMA: The Mariners come to town on Saturday with a 10-8 overall record, but dropped their last two regular season contests, falling to the Knights on October 20 and Maritime on October 23.
Abram Ehrhorn leads seven players with at least 11 points on the season with 19, scoring a team-high seven goals to go along with five assists, which match the team lead. Mark Sommer joins Ehrhorn with five assists on the year and adds three goals with Maximilian Farris and Derek Vanasse each scoring five times.
Chase Miller has started all 18 games to date for USMMA and played nearly 1,500 minutes between the pipes. He holds a .775 save percentage and a 1.01 goals against average while producing five shutouts and making 55 saves.
Regular Season Matchup: The Knights held off the Mariners by a 2-1 score on October 20. Ramirez got the Mount on the board late in the first half, before
Jake Kwong (Staten Island, N.Y.) provided the eventual game winner in the 79
th minute. USMMA got on the board in the 84
th minute on a Michael Melton tally to cut the deficit to the final 2-1 decision.
Recent History: Entering Saturday, the Knights and Mariners have met five times since 2016 with the Mount coming away victorious in the last four meetings, including a 2-0 victory in the 2018 Skyline Conference Championship Final.
Recent Skyline Conference Championship History: The Knights have advanced to the Skyline Conference Championship Final in each of the last three seasons, winning the conference crown in 2017 and 2018 before dropping a double overtime heartbreaker to Maritime in 2019.
