Knights Overwhelm Yeshiva In Regular Season Finale

Trio of Knights finish with two goals

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team closed out the regular season on Thursday night with an 11-0 home win over visiting Yeshiva. Senior Liz Ellsworth (Suffern, N.Y.) was one of three players to finish the game with two goals, collecting a team best five points in the win.
 
Thursday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 9-6-2 overall and 8-1-1 in conference play heading into the First Round of the Skyline Conference Championship on Saturday. The win gives the Knights 10 straight over the Maccabees dating back to the 2007 season.
 
First Half
  • The Knights wasted little time getting on the board in the win with KellyAnn Platt (Staten Island, N.Y.) scoring the eventual game winning goal just over five minutes into the contest. She finished off a passing play from Ellsworth and Ashley Hunter (North Babylon, N.Y.) for all the scoring the Knights would need.
  • Ellsworth followed with her first of the game at the 6:42 mark of the tilt followed by Platt's second of the game in the 17th minute to five the Mount a 3-0 advantage.
  • Raina Quinones (West Babylon, N.Y.) came off the bench to score her first of two goals in the 37th minute and added her second with just under two minutes left before halftime to send the Mount into the intermission with a 5-0 lead.
  • First half shots went to the Mount 18-0.
  • The Knights took the only two corner kicks of the opening period.
 
Second Half
  • The Knights came out of halftime and scored twice in the first two minutes of the second stanza.
  • Ellsworth scored her second of the game just 53 seconds in the second half.
  • Nikki Carter (Southington, Conn.) got onto the scoresheet in at the 46:52 mark, burying a feed from Darla Petricca (New Hyde Park, N.Y.).
  • Petricca followed with her first career goal in the 59th minute.
  • Lauren Grippi (East Islip, N.Y.) scored her first goal of the season in the 70th minute off a pass from Shannon Neiswenter (New York, N.Y.) who picked up her first career point.
  • Brooke Leahy (Rockaway Beach, N.Y.) and Wendy Guerra (Newburgh, N.Y.) closed out the scoring for the Mount with Leahy scoring her first career goal at 76:47 and Guerra potting her third tally of the season at 82:26.
  • Mount Saint Mary got off 18 more shots in the second half.
  • The Knights added seven more corner kicks after halftime.
 
For The Knights
  • Thursday's game featured eight different goal scorers and 11 different players with at least one point.
  • Platt, who added her second game winning goal and moved into a tie for the team lead in goals with six, Quinones, also tied for the team lead in goals, and Ellsworth all scored twice.
  • Ellsworth closed the night with two goals and an assist to lead the team with five points.
  • Petricca and Guerra each finished with a goal and an assist for the Knights.
  • Neiswenter closed the night with two assists.
  • Christina Kakavas (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) earned the shutout in goal without having to make a save.
 
For Yeshiva
  • Goalkeeper Sophie Dubin closed the night with 12 saves for the Maccabees.
 
Match Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary posted a 36-0 advantage in shots, including a 23-0 edge in shots on goal.
  • Corner kicks went to the Knights, 9-0.
 
What's Next
  • Mount Saint Mary plays host to Sarah Lawrence on Saturday in the First Round of the Skyline Conference Championship. Kick-off with the Gryphons is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
