Knights Power Past Purchase

Engel, Quinones score twice in victory

Purchase, N.Y. – Lauren Engel (Red Hook, N.Y.) and Raina Quinones (West Babylon, N.Y.) each scored twice and Brittany Bornstad (Linden, N.J.) totaled three assists as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team cruised past Purchase by a score of 8-0 on Wednesday night.
 
Wednesday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 8-6-2 overall on the season and to 7-1-1 in conference play. The victory is the fifth straight for the Knights over the Panthers, with the Mount outscoring Purchase 25-0 over that stretch.
 
First Half
  • The Knights scored five times in the opening frame, including a pair of goals in the opening 7:18 of play.
  • Wendy Guerra (Newburgh, N.Y.) scored her second goal of the year and first career game winning goal at the 6:03 mark of the contest when she finished off a pass from Ashlee Peters (Fishkill, N.Y.).
  • Nikki Carter (Southington, Conn.) added her third goal of the year just over a minute later when she converted a passing play from Peters and Chloe Kennedy (Middletown, N.Y.) at 7:18.
  • Quinones scored her first of the night in the 20th minute, taking a feed from Bornstad and depositing her third goal of the season at the 19:51 mark.
  • Megan Stosch got on the scoresheet in the 29th minute when she scored off a pass from Kennedy at 28:01.
  • Engel finished off the scoring in the first half in the 42nd minute, converting an assist from Liz Ellsworth (Suffern, N.Y.) at 41:25 to push the Knights in front 5-0.
  • Mount Saint Mary outshot the Panthers 13-3 prior to halftime.
  • First half corner kicks went to the Knights 3-1.
  • Christina Kakavas (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) turned aside a pair of Purchase attempts in the first period.
 
Second Half
  • Mount Saint Mary tacked on three more goals after halftime, scoring three times on 26 second half shots.
  • Ellsworth scored her third goal of the year in the 67th minute, putting away a feed from Maggie Zecca (Mountainside, N.J.) at 66:41.
  • Engel potted her second goal of the night, finishing off Bornstad's second assist of the game at 68:42.
  • The Knights closed out the scoring in the game in the 80th minute when Bornstad assisted Quinones' second tally of the evening at 79:42.
  • Mount Saint Mary outshot Purchase 26-0 in the second half.
  • The Mount took all six corner kicks awarded in the second stanza.
 
For The Knights
  • Six different players scored in the game for the Mount, with 10 different players recording at least one point in the game.
  • Guerra became the fifth different player with a game winning goal for the Knights.
  • Engel scored her first two goals of the season in the win.
  • Quinones picked up her second multiple goal game of the season and moved into a tie for second on the team in goals with four.
  • Ellsworth finished the night with a goal and an assist.
  • Bornstad pushed her team lead in assists to eight and her team lead in points to 18.
  • Kennedy assisted on two goals for the Knights.
  • Peters assisted on two tallies, picking up her first two points of the season.
  • Kakavas was forced to make just two saves in recording her fourth shutout of the season. Kakavas lowered her goals against average to 1.11 and raised her save percentage to .824 in the victory.
 
For The Panthers
  • Rebecca Colgan led Purchase with two shots, both attempts on target.
  • Haley Cascio rounded out the game with seven saves for the Panthers in goal.

  • Mount Saint Mary closed the night with a commanding 39-3 advantage in shots, including a 15-2 edge in shots on goal.
