Knights Drop Non-Conference Decision To Montclair State

Zecca scores second goal of the season

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team played the fifth game of a six-game home stand on Wednesday, falling to visiting Montclair State by a score of 2-1. Senior Maggie Zecca (Mountainside, N.J.) scored the lone goal for the Knights in the contest.
 
Wednesday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 7-5-2 overall on the season, while the Red Hawks improve to 10-4.
 
First Half
  • Montclair State finished the opening 45 minutes with a 10-1 advantage in shots and scored the only goal of the first half.
  • Tara Lambert opened the scoring for the Red Hawks in the eighth minute when she floated a ball into the back of the net from just outside the box at the 7:14 mark of the contest.
  • The Knights were held without a shot for the first 15:42 of the contest before Julia DeSantis (Islip, N.Y.) recorded the Mount's lone attempt of the period.
  • Corner kicks in the opening period were even at 2-2.
  • Christina Kakavas (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) posted four saves prior to the intermission.
  • Montclair State starting keeper, Haley Martin, was not forced to make a stop in the first half.
 
Second Half
  • Montclair State opened a 2-0 lead and got the eventual game winning goal off the foot of Sofia Ambrosio in the 54th minute. She collected a pass from Aileen Cahill and beat Kakavas at 53:29 for the two-goal advantage.
  • Mount Saint Mary sliced its deficit in half just over six minutes later when Zecca found the back of the net for the second time this season. Ashley Hunter (North Babylon, N.Y.) played a ball into the box that Zecca collected and tucked a shot inside the far post to bring the Knights to within 2-1 at 59:40.
  • Mount Saint Mary recorded four shots after the goal, including an attempt that skittered just wide from Darla Petricca (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) at the end of regulation.
  • Shots in the second half went to Montclair State by a 6-5 count.
  • Mount Saint Mary held the advantage in corner kicks 3-2 in the second half.
  • Kakavas made two more saves after the intermission.
 
For The Knights
  • Zecca scored her second goal of the year on her only shot of the contest.
  • Hunter picked up her second assist and second point of the season.
  • DeSantis led the Knights with two shots in the game.
  • Kakavas rounded out the night with six stops in goal.
 
For The Red Hawks
  • Lambert scored for the second time in 2021, while Ambrosio picked up the game winning goal on her third tally of the season.
  • Zoe Steck led the team with five shots, including two on goal.
  • Lindsay Freewalt made a single save in the second half for Montclair State.

  • Montclair State finished with a 16-6 advantage in shots, including an 8-2 edge in shots on goal.
  • Corner kicks in the contest went to the Knights by a 5-4 margin.
