Knights Hold Off USMMA, Score Key Skyline Conference Victory

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team moved into a tie for second place in the league standings on Wednesday with a hard fought 2-1 home win over the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Peter Ramirez (Newburgh, N.Y.) and Jake Kwong (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored the goals for the Knights in the win.
 
Wednesday's win moves the Mount's unbeaten string to seven contests and gives it four straight wins. The Knights, who now stand at 8-5-1 overall and 7-1-1 in league play, move to 4-1 in their last five meetings with the Mariners.
 
First Half
  • Mount Saint Mary finished the first half with a 5-4 advantage in shots.
  • Christopher Maggi (Franklin Square, N.Y.) recorded the Knights' first shot of the contest in the 26th minute.
  • The only goal of the opening stanza came in the 40th minute off the foot of Ramirez. He collected a pass from Matthew Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.) and volleyed a shot into the far top corner at 39:08 to give the Knights a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
  • Corner kicks in the opening period went to the Mariners 2-1.
  • Chase Miller made two saves in the first half, including one on Ramirez in the final minute from close range.
  • Zach Decker (Red Hook, N.Y.) was not forced to make a save for the Knights prior to halftime.
 
Second Half
  • Shots were hard to come by after the break, with USMMA holding a 4-3 edge in attempts in the second half.
  • With the score remaining 1-0, the Knights found the eventual game winning goal off the foot of Kwong in the 79th minute. He took a pass down the right wing from Jack Perna (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) and blasted his first career goal to the far top corner at 78:23 to give the Knights a 2-0 advantage.
  • The two-goal lead held up until the 84th minute when the visitors got on the board. Michael Melton connected following a scramble in the box off a free kick at 83:54 to slices the Mariners' deficit in half.
  • USMMA would get a corner kicks after the goal, but not get a shot off the rest of regulation time.
  • USMMA took all three of the corner kicks awarded after halftime.
  • Decker made a single save in the half for the Mount.
 
For The Knights
  • Ramirez scored his fourth goal of the season, moving into a tie for second on the team in the category.
  • Kwong tallied for the first time in his career and became the sixth different Knight with a game winning goal in 2021.
  • Wyant recorded his team leading 11th assist on the Ramirez goal.
  • Perna picked up his first career point with an assist on the Kwong tally.
  • Ramirez led the team with three shots, including two on goal.
  • Decker picked up the win in goal with one save.
  • Connor Doyle (New Windsor, N.Y.) saw his eight-game goal scoring streak come to an end.
 
For The Mariners
  • Melton scored for the first time in 2021.
  • Melton and David Kelly each recorded a team-high two shots.
  • Miller finished the night with two saves in goal.

  • Shots in the contest were even at eight apiece with Mount Saint Mary holding a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal.
  • The Mariners controlled corner kicks by a 5-1 count.
 
What's Next
  • Trailing first place Manhattanville by three points, the Knights will travel to the Valiants on Saturday for a 4:00 p.m. kick-off.
