Ellsworth nets game winner

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team got back into the win column on Saturday afternoon with a tough 1-0 victory over St. Joseph's-L.I. Senior Liz Ellsworth (Suffern, N.Y.) scored the only goal of the game and Christina Kakavas (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) posted her third shutout in goal for the Knights.
 
Saturday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 7-4-2 overall on the season and to 6-1-1 in Skyline Conference play. The victory stopped a six-game winning streak for the Golden Eagles and moves the Mount to 14-6-1 in the last 21 meetings with St. Joseph's.
 
First Half
  • The Knights scored on their third shot of the game and outshot St. Joseph's 6-2 in the opening 45 minutes.
  • Ellsworth potted her second goal of the season and her first game winning tally of the year in the seventh minute. She worked her way into the box and tucked a shot inside the far post at 6:57 to give the Knights all the scoring they would need.
  • Leading 1-0, Kakavas turned aside a penalty kick taken by Abbey Curcio in the 32nd minute to keep the Golden Eagles off the board.
  • Kakavas finished with two saves prior to halftime.
  • Mount Saint Mary entered the break with a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
 
Second Half
  • Neither team would score after halftime with the Knights outshooting the Golden Eagles 5-2 after the break.
  • The Knights took the only three corner kicks in the second stanza.
  • Kakavas finished with a single save in the second to half to earn the shutout.
 
For The Knights
  • Ellsworth scored on her only shot of the game.
  • Brittany Bornstad (Linden, N.J.) led the Mount with three shots, including two shots on goal.
  • Chloe Kennedy (Middletown, N.Y.), Ashley Hunter (Huntington, N.Y.) and KellyAnn Platt (Staten Island, N.Y.) all recorded two shots.
  • Kakavas finished the shutout with three stops. Kakavas has now made 49 stops on the year and raised her save percentage to .831 while lowering her goals against average to 1.16.
 
For The Golden Eagles
  • Curcio led the team with two shots, including one shot on goal.
  • Mikayla Ritter finished the day with six saves in goal.
