Riddle Sets Three Set Kills Record In Sweep Of St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn

Junior put away 24 kills, hit .400

Newburgh, N.Y. – Junior Grace Riddle (Wantagh, N.Y.) set a new three set kills record on Thursday in a 25-10, 25-13, 25-14 sweep of visiting St. Joseph's-L.I. Riddle put away 24 kills for the Knights in the win, topping the previous mark of 21 set in 2007.
 
Thursday's win is the Mount's second straight and pushes it to 10-9 overall and to 4-4 in the Skyline Conference. The victory over the Bears is the sixth straight for the Knights since the start of the 2015 season.
 
First Set
  • The Knights put away 12 kills in the opening frame and hit .265 as a unit, limiting St. Joseph's to five winners and a .031 attack percentage.
  • After scoring the first four points of the set, the Mount broke the first stanza open with 10 straight points to surge in front 14-1. Riddle put away four kills over the run with Alyssa Barbara (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) adding a pair of aces.
  • St. Joseph's used a five-point run to climb to within 16-7, before the Knights scored nine of the final 12 points of the set.
  • Mount Saint Mary put away the final four points of the set to open a 1-0 lead, highlighted by a kill and service ace from Jackie Wolf (Kings Park, N.Y.).
 
Second Set
  • Mount Saint Mary put away 12 more kills in the middle stanza while holding the visitors to just four winners.
  • The Knights opened a 7-2 lead with a 6-0 run that featured a trio of kills from Riddle.
  • After the Bears scratched back to within 7-5 with three straight points, the Mount took advantage of a Riddle winner and three Bear miscues to move in front 11-5.
  • A 6-2 stretch pushed the Knights in front 17-7 with Riddle in the middle of things again with two kills and an ace.
  • Riddle pushed the Knights in front 21-12 with a kill and after a point from the visitors, the Mount scored the final three points, keyed by kills from Riddle and Sabrina Romano (Glen Cove, N.Y.), to take a 2-0 lead.
 
Third Set
  • Monut Saint Mary added 11 more kills in the final frame and saw St. Joseph's hit -.139 to close out the victory.
  • A 9-1 run early in the set saw the Knights open a 14-5 advantage.
  • A second 9-1 stretch in the late stages of the set saw the Mount build its lead to 23-8. Wolf supported the run for the Mount with a kill and an ace.
  • After the Bears scored five straight points to get to within 23-13, the Knights scored two of the final three points, including a kill from Riddle, to close out the sweep.
 
For The Knights
  • Riddle reached double-figures in kills for the 15th straight match and posted at least 20 winners in a match for the seventh time in 2021. She broke the previous three set kill mark of 21 set by Amanda Carfora against Polytechnic on September 22, 2007 and hit an even .400 on Thursday. Riddle finished off a strong all-around night with 11 digs, two blocks and an ace.
  • Riddle finished with 24 of the team's 35 kills in the match and stands at 311 kills on the season, 139 short of the single season record with nine regular season matches remaining on the schedule.
  • Romano finished with four kills for the Knights and two blocks.
  • Renee Hydo (Bethpage, N.Y.) lifted 11 digs and put away two kills.
  • Barbara finished the night with a team-high 17 digs and joined Wolf with a team-high three aces.
  • Wolf posted 12 digs and three aces.
  • Fran Cammarata (Carmel, N.Y.) handed out 27 assists and lifted nine digs for the Knights.
 
For The Bears
  • St. Joseph's was led by five kills from Cristina Morales.
  • Caitlyn Bilbao handed out nine assists.
  • Carol Melo lifted a match-high 25 digs for the Bears.
 
Match Statistics
  • Mount Saint Mary finished the match with a 35-13 advantage in kills, hitting .193 as a team.
  • The Knights posted an 8-5 edge in service aces in the victory.
  • Total team blocks went to the Knights by a slim 2-1 margin.
What's Next
  • The Knights head to Hunter on Saturday for a non-conference tri-match with the host Hawks and Montclair State.
  • The Bears will host Manhattanville on Monday.
