Maggi’s Overtime Winner Sends Mount Saint Mary To Road Win At St. Joseph’s-L.I.

Knights move unbeaten string to five matches

Patchogue, N.Y. – After the Knights surrendered the lead late in regulation time, Christopher Maggi (Franklin Square, N.Y.) sent the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team to a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory at St. Joseph's-L.I. Tuesday night. The goal is the second of Maggi's career and pushed the Mount to 4-0-1 in its last five outings.
 
Mount Saint Mary, who improved to 6-5-1 overall and 5-1-1 in league play, led until the 89th minute on Tuesday when St. Joseph's evened the score at 2-2 on a goal from Diego Saravia. Maggi then scored in the 96th minute to give the Knights their sixth straight win over the Golden Eagles and second straight overtime triumph against St. Joseph's.
 
First Half
  • Connor Doyle (New Windsor, N.Y.) wasted little time picking up a goal in seven straight games, giving the Knights a 1-0 lead just 82 seconds into the contest.
  • Doyle struck again with his second of the game in the 20th minute when he finished off a cross from Maggi at the 19:05 mark of the contest.
  • St. Joseph's answered in the 26th minute when it sliced its deficit in half on Justin Gracia goal at the 25:54 mark of the match.
  • Mount Saint Mary finished the half with an 8-5 advantage in shots.
  • First half corner kicks went to the Golden Eagles 5-2.
  • Zach Decker (Red Hook, N.Y.) closed the opening 45 minutes with a single save in goal.
 
Second Half
  • St. Joseph's doubled up the Mount in shots in the second half, 10-5.
  • Mount Saint Mary maintained the slim 2-1 advantage until the waning minutes of regulation time.
  • Trailing by a goal, Saravia curled a shot home off a feed from Sonny Farrell at 88:49 to even the score at 2-2.
  • Mount Saint Mary had the final chance of the second half when Matthew Flanagan (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) sailed a shot high off a corner kick with 12 seconds left in regulation time.
  • Decker finished the second half with a trio of saves for the Knights.
 
Overtime Period
  • Mount Saint Mary had the only shot of the overtime period.
  • Following a restart after a foul, Maggi collected a loose ball after a scramble and found the back of the net to end the contest at 95:48.
 
For The Knights
  • Maggi became the fifth different Knight to score a game winning goal in 2021. He finished the night with three points.
  • Doyle, who has scored in seven straight games, moved his team lead in goals to 12 and points to 24. His two goals give him three multiple goal games in 2021.
  • Doyle led the team with four shots.
  • Matthew Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.) recorded three attempts with Maggi and Peter Ramirez (Newburgh, N.Y.) each getting off two shots.
  • Decker finished the night with four saves in goal.
 
For The Golden Eagles
  • Saravia scored on a goal on four shots and added a helper on the Gracia marker.
  • Farrell assisted on the tying goal late in regulation.
  • Tyler Flaherty made three saves in net.
 
Match Statistics
  • St. Joseph's held a slim 15-14 advantage in shots, while shots on goal were even at 6-6.
  • The Golden Eagles closed the night with a slim 8-6 edge in corner kicks.
