Knights Slip Past Bard In Double Overtime

Holland nets game winner in second OT

Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y. – Senior Billy Holland (Pearl River, N.Y.) scored just over a minute into the second overtime period on Saturday afternoon to send the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team to a thrilling 11-10 victory at Bard. Holland was one of five Knights with two goals, with Brandon Holloway (Garden City, N.Y.) and Michael Galluci (Northport, N.Y.) leading the way with four points apiece.
 
Mount Saint Mary got off to a good start in the opening period, scoring the first three goals of the game in the first 10 minutes of action. Holland, Gallucci and Brian Esposito (Floral Park, N.Y.) scored their first goals of the season for the Mount with Vinny Vaccaro (Floral Park, N.Y.) adding an assist over the opening run.
 
The two teams traded the next six goals before the Mount scored four of the final five goals of the first half to take a 9-4 advantage into the intermission. Esposito, Holloway and R.J. Maher (Mount Sinai, N.Y.) each scored man-up goals over the closing run for the Knights.
 
Mount Saint Mary outshot Bard 31-13 over the first half and turned the ball over just five times. The Knights held a 16-14 edge in groundballs prior to halftime, while Bard won eight of the 15 face-offs contested.
 
After potting nine goals over the first 30 minutes of the game, the Mount was limited to only two goals after halftime. Maher scored his second goal of the game early in the fourth quarter to give the Mount a 10-6 lead, before the Raptors scored the final four goals of regulation, including a Cory Rich tally at the fourth quarter horn to knot the score at 10-10.
 
Following a scoreless first overtime period, Holland picked up his second goal of the game at the 2:55 mark of the second overtime period to give the Knights the season opening victory. The goal came on the Mount's third shot of the second extra frame.
 
Holloway and Gallucci each finished with two goals and a pair of assists in the win, with Esposito scoring twice and adding a helper. Holland and Maher supported the balanced scoring attack with two goals each.
 
Newcomer Zachary Beam (Montgomery, N.Y.) won 12 face-offs for the Knights in the win and led the team with five groundballs. Esposito led the team with three caused turnovers and added three groundballs with Holland securing four groundballs.
 
Bard featured a trio of players with two goals, led by Devon Wall who finished with two tallies and three assists. Michael O'Donnell won 10 face-offs for the Raptors with Emanuel Grenier-Benoit picking up six groundballs and causing a turnover.
 
Sophomore Devin Kelley (Hebron, Conn.) picked up the win for the Knights in goal, making seven saves and securing a groundball in his first career start. Lyle Healey suffered the loss for Bard with 24 stops and five groundballs.
 
Mount Saint Mary closed the day with a 61-37 edge in overall shots and a 35-17 advantage in shots on goal. The Knights edge Bard in groundballs 36-32 and finished the day 16-for-21 in clearing chances and with four man-up goals.
 
At 1-0 on the season, Mount Saint Mary begins a five game home stand on Tuesday when it plays host to Western Connecticut. Face-off for the home opener is set for 6:00 p.m.
