Knights Tripped Up By Western Connecticut

Marario records 100th career point

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team opened the home schedule on Tuesday evening with a 13-8 non-conference loss to visiting Western Connecticut. Senior Ryan Maraio (Staten Island, N.Y.) totaled three points in the game, including the 100th of his career.
 
After the two teams traded goals in the early going on Tuesday, the Colonials ripped off six straight goals to open a 7-1 lead with 8:22 left in the second stanza. Maraio's first goal of the season evened the score at 1-1 as he became the eighth player in program history to reach 100 points.
 
After Maraio scored at the 9:31 mark of the first stanza, the Knights went until the 8:02 mark of the second period until finding the scoring column again. Chris Maggio (Valley Stream, N.Y.) got the Mount back on the board with his firs of the season off a feed from Vinny Vaccaro (Floral Park, N.Y.).
 
Following the Maggio goal, the two teams traded tallies heading into halftime. Marco Spagnuolo (Staten Island, N.Y.) added a goal for the Knights before Timothy Yannucci scored a man-up goal for the Colonials to push them in front 9-3 heading into the intermission.
 
Mount Saint Mary was outshot 23-17 in the opening 30 minutes, but won nine of the 13 face-offs contested. Groundballs at the break were even at 19-19 with the Colonials scoring on each of their two man-up chances before halftime.
 
The Colonials pushed their lead to 10-3 early in the third period, before back-to-back goals from Thomas Bahmer III (East Brunswick, N.J.) and Maraio brought the Mount to within 10-5. Western Connecticut again answered with two straight goals to open a 12-5 lead before the Mount scored three of the final four goals of the contest to get the final disadvantage to 13-8. Brandon Holloway (Garden City, N.Y.), Vaccaro and Trevor Cannella (Wantagh, N.Y.) tallied for the Mount over the final 6:23.
 
Maraio was the lone Knight to score more than once on Tuesday and registered a season-high three points for the Mount. Brian Esposito (Floral Park, N.Y.) rounded out the night with a trio of assists for the Knights.
 
Zachary Beam (Montgomery, N.Y.) was one of two Knights to have a strong night in face-offs, going 10-for-13 with six groundballs. Spagnuolo won six of the 10 draws he took and led the team with eight groundballs.
 
Western Connecticut was led by four goals from Stephen Cicchetti with Ryan Reuling adding three goals and an assist. Max Gironda and Matt Peters each caused two turnovers, with Peters winning five face-offs and collecting four groundballs.
 
Sophomore Devin Kelley (Hebron, Conn.) made his second straight start for the Mount in goal, making four saves in just under 29 minutes of work. Michael McCarthy (Bellmore, N.Y.) saw his first collegiate action and made four stops in 31:20 of action. Perry Cassidy stopped 16 shots for the Colonials and secured four groundballs.
 
Western Connecticut finished the night with a 44-32 advantage in overall shots while the Mount held a 24-21 edge in shots on goal. The Knights doubled up Western Connecticut in face-offs 16-8 and closed the night with a 40-30 edge in groundballs.
 
Tuesday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 1-1 overall on the season. The Knights continue a five game home stand on Saturday when they welcome Emerson to Kaplan Field. Face-off with the Lions is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
