Old Westbury, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team used a strong fourth quarter surge to win its eighth straight contest on the road against Old Westbury 85-60. Sophomore
Annie Keenan (Nesconset, N.Y.) tied her career high with 22 points and registered her fifth double-double of the season for the Knights.
The Panthers jumped out to an early 12-7 lead just over seven minutes in on a layup from Ja'Nya Flash before the Mount countered with a 10-0 run to close the quarter with a five-point lead. Sophomore
Lauren Desrats (Warwick, N.Y.) tallied seven quick points in the opening quarter.
Old Westbury took the lead back after scoring five straight points to open the second quarter as La'Niya Clark knocked down a triple. The back and forth second stanza consisted of two ties and eight lead changes while the Mount held a three-point lead heading into the halftime intermission.
Mount Saint Mary shot 39.4-percent from the field in the first half but was just 3-for-14 from three-point territory. Old Westbury finished the half at 32.1-percent and made two threes while also outscoring the Knights by six at the free throw line.
Desrats led the way with nine points at the half while
Toriana Tabasco (Hillsdale, N.J.) and
Morina Bojka (Prospect, Conn.) each tallied six points. The Mount assisted on nine of its 13 made field goals in the first half. Davida Warren recorded 13 points and eight rebounds in the first 20 minutes for the Panthers.
The third quarter continued to go back and forth as neither team took more than a three-point lead during the first nine minutes. The Mount scored the final six points of the third period as Bojka and
Cameron Villanueva (Columbia, Conn.) drove to the bucket for layups. Keenan and Bojka combined for 18 of the 26 points scored for the Knights in the quarter as they shot 10-for-17 in the period.
Mount Saint Mary opened up the lead in the final quarter as the Knights went on a 16-2 run over the first five minutes. The Knights knocked down four three-pointers in the run to push the lead to 21 points at the 5:45 mark. The Mount finished the final quarter outscoring Old Westbury 28-10 and forced 10 turnovers.
Bojka finished the second half with 18 points while Keenan added 17 as the Mount finished 55.5-percent from the field and 6-for-12 from three-point territory. Micah Browne added eight points for the Panthers as they shot 34.4-percent in the half and made just two threes while turning it over 13 times.
Keenan finished her strong afternoon with 22 points and 10 rebounds while adding three assists and three steals. Bojka continues her solid junior campaign with 25 points and six rebounds with Desrats adding 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Lyndsay Pace (Cranford, N.J.) led the team in assists with seven on the day.
Warren finished with a double-double of her own for Old Westbury as she led the way with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Clark added 13 points and six rebounds while Browne finished with 12 points and a team-high six assists.
The Knights finished shooting 47.8-percent from the field and buried nine three-pointers while the Panthers finished at 32.8-percent and made four threes. The Mount held the edge in points in the paint by 10 and scored 27 points off turnovers. Mount Saint Mary finished with 20 assists on 33 made field goals.
The Knights improve to 14-3 overall on the season and 12-0 in Skyline Conference play. Next on the slate for the Mount is the beginning of a two game home stand against St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Tuesday evening. Tip-off with the Bears at the Kaplan Center is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
