Knights Suffer Home Loss To Ithaca

Cannella nets fifth goal of the season

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team returned to action on Saturday afternoon and dropped a 4-1 non-conference decision to visiting #RV/22 Ithaca at Kaplan Field. Senior Chrissy Cannella (Cornwall, N.Y.) finished the contest with her fifth goal of the season.
 
Ithaca broke a scoreless tie late in the first half when Megan O'Reilly scored her first of two goals in the game in the 32nd minute. She took a through ball from Alex Epifani and found the back of the net at 31:43 to send the Bombers to a 1-0 advantage at the intermission.
 
In a tightly contested first half, Ithaca took five of the nine shots awarded, while Mount Saint Mary took each of the four corner kicks in the half. Ithaca goalkeeper Sara Jacobsze kept the Knights off the board with three first half saves, while Cyan Scott (Buena Park, Calif.) made a single stop for the Mount.
 
Ithaca got the eventual game winning goal early in the second half when Epifani broke through the Mount's backline and potted her first goal of the year, an unassisted tally, at 51:54 to give Ithaca a two-goal advantage.
 
The 2-0 lead held until the Mount got on the board late in regulation time off a free kick. Cannella took the restart and tucked a ball inside the far post at 83:19 to get the Mount to within a single shot with just under seven minutes to play in regulation.
 
Ithaca answered right back with a pair of goals in the final four minutes to spread the final advantage to three goals. Epifani scored her second of the game in the 87th minute, with O'Reilly potting a free kick for her second of the game at 87:54.
 
Cannella moved her team lead in goals to five and her team-high point total to 11 with her second half strike on Saturday. She finished with a team-high four shots, with Liz Ellsworth (Suffern, N.Y.) adding three shots and Lauren Engel (Red Hook, N.Y.) and Alexa Franceschi (Red Hook, N.Y.) each recording a pair of attempts.
 
Epifani closed the day with five points, scoring twice and assisting on one goal, with O'Reilly totaling four points with her two tallies. O'Reilly led all players in the game with seven shots.
 
Jacobsze picked up her second win of the season in goal for Ithaca, posting five stops, while Scott finished off the day with three saves for the Knights.
 
Overall, Ithaca finished the day with a slim 13-11 edge in shots, including a 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. Mount Saint Mary rounded out the day with a commanding 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
 
At 1-3 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary returns to action on Wednesday when it travels to Montclair State. Kick-off with the Red Hawks is set for 4:00 p.m.
