Men's Soccer Drops 1-0 Decision To Middlebury

Rapp makes five saves in loss

Middlebury, V.t. - The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team was shutout on Tuesday night as the Knights dropped a 1-0 decision to non-conference foe Middlebury. Junior goalie Tyler Rapp (East Berne, N.Y.) made five saves in the defeat.

The Mount's best opportunity to score came in the fourth minute when Joey Dolan (Highland, N.Y.) made a pair of nice moves before his quick shot was denied by Panther goalkeeper Ryan Grady. Two minutes later, Ben Potter made a crossing pass to Aidan Robinson for a quick touch in tight, but the attempt was turned away by Rapp.

Middlebury broke through at the 26:19 mark with a goal from Max Drazen on a feed from Ben Powers, who picked off a pass and moved the ball ahead to Drazen, who won a race to the ball before chipping a shot over the head of the keeper. The Panthers nearly went up 2-0 in the 40th minute, but Rapp denied Shams Mohajerani's attempt. Middlebury finished the first half with a 6-1 edge in shots as well as owning the only two corner kicks of the first 45 minutes.

In the second half, Brandon Reid had a great chance to extend the Panthers lead in the 54th minute, but his shot banged off the left post. The Knights had a couple of opportunities throughout the remainder of the game, but Grady turned aside shots Connor Doyle (New Windsor, N.Y.) and Matt Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.) to preserve his third shutout of the season. Middlebury finished the game with a 14-5 lead in shots and a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.

At 3-4 overall, the Knights continue a three game road trip as they head to Rutgers-Newark on Monday evening. Kick-off with the Scarlet Raiders is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
