Men's Soccer Earns Hard-Fought Victory Against Rutgers-Newark

Rapp turns away eight shots in the victory

Box Score Newark, N.J. – The Mount Saint Mary College earned a hard-fought win on Monday evening as the Knights defeated Rutgers-Newark 2-1 on the road. Junior goalkeeper Tyler Rapp (East Berne, N.Y.) made eight saves in the victory.
 
The Knights got off to a hot start as they found the back of the net in the 18th minute. Matthew Iaria (Suffern, N.Y.) won a loose ball in the box and buried into the bottom left corner to give the Mount an early 1-0 lead on his first goal of the season.
 
Just under two minutes later, a ball was played in the box from Mount Saint Mary and it deflected off a Rutgers-Newark defender to push the Knights lead to two.
 
After three strong saves from Rapp, the Scarlet Raiders got on the board just before halftime. Off a corner kick, Franco Catania buried the ball past the keeper off assists from Joe Alba and Dominik Homola. The Scarlet Raiders held a 9-2 advantage in shots, including seven shots on goal, in the first 45 minutes and held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
 
In the second half, the Scarlet Raiders accelerated the pace of the contest as they outshot Mount Saint Mary 7-1, including three shots on goal.
 
Rutgers-Newark had several great chances to tie the game, including Catania's bid for a second goal that glanced off the right post in the 82nd minute. Joshua Breton-Jones also rang one off the crossbar in the 85th minute as the Knights held on for a 2-1 victory.
 
The Knights earned the victory while being outshot 16-3 in the contest, including 10-1 in shots on goal. The Scarlet Raiders also held a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.
 
At 4-4 overall, the Knights return to action on Wednesday evening as they travel to Manhattanville for a Skyline Conference contest. Kick-off with the Valiants is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
