Men's Soccer Topples Yeshiva In Skyline Opener

Five different players score in Knights victory

Newburgh, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team won its Skyline Conference opener on Wednesday evening as the Knights defeated Yeshiva 5-1 at Kaplan Field. Five different players found the back of the net in the Mount victory.

The Knights offense found its groove earlier in the first half when senior Joey Dolan (Highland, N.Y.) scored his third goal of the season on a sweet cross from the end line from freshman Peter Ramirez (New Windsor, N.Y.) in the 7th minute After an Ismael Bravo (Middletown, N.Y.) shot was turned away, the Maccabees countered with a goal of their own from Jess Rom who scored from 35 yards out off an assist from Ethan Fettaya at the 10:28 mark to draw the game to a 1-1 tie.

Both teams held serve for the next 28 minutes as neither team could find the range. At the 38:24 mark, Connor Doyle (New Windsor, N.Y.) fed Tyler Vermilyea (Rosendale, N.Y.) who buried the ball through the keeper's hands for his first tally of the year to give the Knights a 2-1 advantage heading into the halftime intermission. The Knights held a 17-6 shots advantage through the first 45 minutes and registered the lone two corner kicks of the half.

The second half began rather quiet for the two squads as neither team registered a shot in the first 15 minutes of the second half until Vermilyea's cross found the head of Doyle who knocked home his first goal of the season to push the Mount lead to two. The Knights then proceeded to score goals just 46 seconds apart as Matt Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.) scored his third goal of the year off a penalty kick and Zidan Douglas (Middletown, N.Y.) scored his first career goal as a Knight to put the Moutn up 5-1.

The Mount held a 6-1 shots edge in the second half as a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks. Dolan and Wyant remain tied for the team lead in goals with three apiece as Sean Madden (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) picked up his first win of the season after making two saves in the first half. Tyler Rapp (East Berne, N.Y.) made one save in the second 45 minutes of play. The Knights finished the game with a 23-7 advantage in shots as well as a 9-4 shots on goal edge. Mount Saint Mary also took all six corner kicks in the contest.

At 3-3 overall and 1-0 in Skyline play, the Mount returns to action on September 17 as they travel north to take on non-conference foe Middlebury. Kick-off with the Panthers is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
