Oneonta, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team lost a high scoring affair on Wednesday evening as Oneonta defeated the Knights 11-8.
Steven Mirra (Wallingford, Conn.) went 3-for-5 in the contest while
Ryan Lutinski (Easton, Conn.) crushed a two run homerun in the defeat.
Oneonta got on the board first after RBI singles by Sean McGlynn and Vincent Prisco while a throwing error plated a third run in the game. The Red Dragons added another run in the second after James Zupo tripled and then scored on a wild pitch.
The Knights got on the board in the top of the third after a RBI single by Mirra and a RBI groundout from
John Santana (Warwick, N.Y.) scoring Sal and
Anthony Rizzo (Smithtown, N.Y.).
Patrick McGee drove in McGlynn and Prisco with a single down the left field line in the third to push the lead to 6-2.
Devin Tait (Staten Island, N.Y.) singled with one out in the fourth and Lutinski drove a ball to left field for a two run home run to cut the lead to two.
David DeBerardinis knocked in another run on a fielder's choice and then Jonathan Lezette scored on a double steal to push the lead to four once again.
The Red Dragons pulled off another double steal in the sixth and then added a 10
th run on a wild pitch. The Knights cut the lead to five after a Tait single followed by a throwing error that scored
Liam Merlin (Reading, Mass.).
In the seventh inning,
Joe Stewart (Valley Stream, N.Y.) led off with a walk and Mirra doubled down the line to push runners to second and third. Santana followed it up with a two RBI double to cut the lead to three.
Michael DiGiovanni (Shirley, N.Y.) laced the third double of the inning to plate Santana to make the score 10-8.
SUNY Oneonta added an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when DeBerardinis scored on a wild pitch. The Mount loaded the bases in the top of the ninth with nobody out but failed to push a run across in the inning.
Alexander Maher (Mineola, N.Y.) took the loss for the Mount as he threw two innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on three hits while striking out three. Michael Losek picked up the win for the Red Dragons, tossing three innings on one hit and one earned run.
Mirra added a double and a RBI and Santana had three RBI for the Knights. Merlin and Tait each had two hits while Lutinski finished with two RBI.
Prisco and McGee combined for four hits and three RBI while McGlynn scored three runs. The Red Dragons stole 10 bases in the contest.
At 8-9 overall, the Mount resumes Skyline action with two doubleheaders this weekend. The Knights take on Farmingdale State on Saturday and then travel to Yeshiva on Sunday. Both twinbills are scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
