Baseball Swept In Skyline Doubleheader With Old Westbury

N. Rizzo goes deep in game one

Old Westbury, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team was eliminated from postseason contention on Saturday afternoon as the Knights dropped both games of a doubleheader against Old Westbury. The Mount dropped a back-and-forth game one 10-9 and then lost 5-1 in game two.

The Panthers stormed out to an early lead after putting up six runs in the top half of the first inning. Shaun Kaminski knocked home the first run on a RBI single, followed by a Drew Robertson RBI walk. Michael Borsch and Mike Manetta each followed with two RBI singles to give Old Westbury the early 6-0 lead.

The Knights responded with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning as Steven Mirra (Wallingford, Conn.) led off with a walk, Devin Tait (Staten Island, N.Y.) reached on an error and John Santana (Warwick, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch. Nick Rizzo (Smithtown, N.Y.) and Matt Barbieri (New Paltz, N.Y.) each had RBI walks to cut the lead to four.

Old Westbury added a run in the second on Kaminski's second RBI single of the day, scoring John Condon. Mount Saint Mary cut the lead in third after Santana and N. Rizzo led off the inning with back to back hits. Jack Goodwin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) knocked them both in with two outs to cut the lead to three.

The Panthers found the scoreboard once again in the fifth as Sean Paprocki scored on a fielder's choice and Kaminski drove in his third run of the day to push the Old Westbury lead to 9-4. 

The Knights responded with a crooked number in the bottom half of the fifth as Santana and N. Rizzo led off the inning with back to back hits once again. Santana scored on a throwing error on a steal of second and then N. Rizzo was knocked in by a pinch hit single by Braden Perry (Brockport, N.Y.). Following a pitching change, Mirra drove in two runs with two outs to trim the Old Westbury lead to one.

The Mount tied the game at nine when N. Rizzo hit his first home run of the season over the left field fence in the sixth. Kaminski came to the plate in the eighth and hit a solo blast of his own and the game winner as the Panthers held on to an one run lead.

Christian Spano (Mahopac, N.Y.) started on the mound for the Mount as he lasted 3.0 innings, allowing eight hits, seven runs and five walks. Alexander Maher (Mineola, N.Y.) took the tough loss as he tossed five innings out the bullpen, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits.

Patrick Quinn started for Old Westbury as he threw 4.2 innings, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on six hits, five walks and struck out five. Joe Sarni picked up the win in relief as he threw 4.1 innings, allowing three hits and one run while striking out three.

N. Rizzo finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. Santana was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and Goodwin finished 2-for-3 with two RBI. Mirra also finished with two runs batted in.

Kaminski finished the day 4-for-5 with four RBI with a home run, Manetta was 4-for-5 with two RBI and two doubles and Condon was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

The Panthers scored early once again in game two as Condon singled home the first run of the game. Brandon Wilson scored on an error and then Kaminski singled home his fifth run of the doubleheader to give Old Westbury a 3-0 lead after the top half of the first.

The Knights scratched out its only run on a Perry RBI groundout that scored Michael DiGiovanni (Shirley, N.Y.). Old Westbury added a run in the sixth on a Borsch RBI single and added a fifth run in the seventh on a Peter Capel sacrifice fly.

Santana took the loss as he tossed three innings, allowing three runs on three hits, walked two and struck out three. Christian Tessitore earned the win for Old Westbury as he tossed six innings, allowing one run on five hits and struck out seven.

DiGiovanni finished the game 3-for-3 as the Knights managed only five hits in game two. Anthony Franco (Franklin Square, N.Y.) and N. Rizzo had the two other hits for Mount Saint Mary.

Kaminski was 4-for-4 at the plate in game two and was one of four guys who drove in a run. Wilson had two runs scored and Borsch had two hits for the Panthers.

At 12-16 overall and 6-10 in Skyline play, the Knights have a doubleheader with Purchase that is currently being rescheduled. Date, time and location will be announced as soon as possible.
