Baseball Splits Season Finale With Purchase

Sal Rizzo tosses eight shutout innings in game one

Purchase, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team split a Skyline Conference doubleheader in its regular season finale against Purchase on Monday evening. The Knights won 2-0 in game one and then fell 9-0 in the nightcap.

The Mount scratched out a run in the first inning on a John Santana (Warwick, N.Y.) RBI double that drove in Steven Mirra (Wallingford, Conn.), who reached on a one out walk.

The Knights added a second run in the bottom of the fifth when Robert Brust (Shirley, N.Y.) scored on a Purchase fielding error. Purchase's best scoring opportunity was in the top of the seventh as Nick Lasala and Glennd Jarrin led off with back to back singles. Following a sacrifice bunt, Sal Rizzo (Smithtown, N.Y.) got two flyouts that couldnt't produce a run to end the threat.

Rizzo earned the win as he threw eight shutout innings, allowing six hits while striking out six. Matthew Borriello (Montgomery, N.Y.) picked up his first save of the season after tossing a scoreless ninth. Santana finished the game 2-for-3 with a RBI and Jack Goodwin (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) added two hits for the Mount.

CJ Owens took the tough luck loss as he finished with a eight inning complete game, allowing six hits on two runs (one earned). Patrick Wallace and Lasala each finished with two hits for Purchase.
