Eli Laikin (Oak Bluffs, Mass.), the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team got back into the win column on Saturday with a convincing 9-3 road non-conference win at Albright.
The Knights never trailed on Saturday and scored the only four goals of the opening 30 minutes and the first eight goals of the game overall.
Anthony Kearns (Clinton, N.J.) opened the scoring with his fifth goal of the season, before freshman
Michael Darcy (Islip, N.Y.) found the back of the net for the first time in his career with the eventual game winner with just over six minutes left in the first half.
Mount Saint Mary finished the opening 30 with a 19-15 advantage in shots, but 10 first half saves from Laikin kept the Lions off the board. The Mount did not win a face-off prior to halftime and groundballs in the opening 30 minutes were even at 18.
The Mount quickly doubled its lead coming out of halftime, scoring four goals in the first five-and-a-half minutes of the third period.
Billy Holland (Pearl River, N.Y.) scored twice over the run with Maraio scoring once and assisting on the other three goals.
After the Lions finally got on the board at the 5:26 mark of the third they scored three of the final four goals of the contest. The lone Mount marker was
Brian Esposito's (Floral Park, N.Y.) second of the season with 6:33 left in the contest.
Maraio finished off the win for the Mount with four assists and six points, moving his team lead in helpers to nine and his team standard in points to 14. Holland scored a trio of goals to increase his team lead in markers to nine, with Kearns supporting the scoring attack with a goal and a pair of assists.
Holland and
Matthew Martino (Watertown, Conn.) each collected a team-high five groundballs with
Peter Beidl (Clifton Park, N.Y.), Maraio and
Danny Marshall (Oceanside, N.Y.) each securing four groundballs for the Knights.
Beidl and Martino each caused a team-high three turnovers for the Mount, with
Marco Spagnuolo (Staten Island, N.Y.) winning seven face-offs and recording four groundballs.
Laikin rounded out the day with a career-high 14 saves and collected a groundball in his second win of the season. Conor Scafidi took the hard luck loss with 17 stops for the Lions.
Mount Saint Mary finished the day with a 38-26 advantage in overall shots and a 26-17 edge in shots on goal. Face-offs in the game were even at 8-8, with the Mount holding the edge in groundballs 44-33 and went 15-for-19 in clearing chances.
At 2-2 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary returns home to take on Union on Tuesday afternoon. Face-off at Kaplan Field is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
