Knights Begin Home Stand With Loss To Union

Escudero tallies lone goal for the Mount

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team opened a four game home stand on Tuesday with a 20-1 loss to visiting Union. The Mount's lone goal came off the stick of senior Vincent Escudero (Bridgewater, N.J.) in the second quarter.
 
Union opened the game up early with seven goals in the first period and carried a 14-1 lead into the intermission with seven more goals in the second frame. The Dutchmen scored the first 12 goals of the game before Escudero tallied for the fourth time this season at the 6:39 mark of the second stanza.
 
The visitors finished the opening 30 minutes with 37-5 advantage in shots and a 20-4 edge in shots on goal. The Dutchmen won 14 of the 17 face-offs contested in the first half and held a 24-10 first half advantage in groundballs.
 
Union held the Mount off the board in the second 30 minutes and allowed only five shots over the final two periods. The Dutchmen scored six more time after the intermission, including four goals from Peter Burnes.
 
Union featured 10 different goal scorers in the game, led by four goals each from Kerry Lyne and Burnes. John Edmonds, Jack Kaufman and Hank Duvall each finished the game with a pair of assists, while Patrick Regan won six face-offs and secured five groundballs.
 
Escudero finished off his fourth goal of the season and moved into fifth on the team in tallies. Junior Ryan Maraio (Staten Island, N.Y.) recorded his team leading 10th assist of the season with senior Peter Beidl (Clifton Park, N.Y.) rounding out the day with two caused turnovers and a pair of groundballs.
 
Junior Eli Laikin (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) suffered the loss in goal, making 11 saves in 45 minutes of work. Freshman Devin Kelley (Hebron, Conn.) made his second career appearance and finished with a trio of fourth period saves. Union used three goalies on the day with Graham Goldheim making five stops in 30 minutes of action.
 
For the game, Union finished with the advantage in overall shot 59-10, shots on goal 34-7, groundballs 42-20 and face-off wins 21-4. The Mount went 16-for-20 in clearing chances, while Union rounded out the day a perfect 20-for-20.
 
At 2-3 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary continues its season long home stand on Saturday when it plays host to Misericordia. Face-off with the Cougars is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
