Men's Soccer Sinks Maritime, Wins Fourth Straight

Wyant scores seventh, Guglielmo nets his first of the season

Newburgh, N.Y. - Matt Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.) scored his seventh goal of the year and Anthony Guglielmo (Setauket, N.Y.) potted his first goal of the season as the Mount Saint Mary Men's Soccer team won its fourth straight contest on Wednesday evening 2-0 over Maritime.

The Knights first opportunity came just four minutes into the match as Jonathan Schefer (Greenlawn, N.Y.) and Joey Dolan (Highland, N.Y.) had back-to-back shots turned away by Maritime goalkeeper Ethan Silver. Joseph Mesoraca (Oceanside, N.Y.) had a strong chance off a header that hit off the left post at the 6:53 mark of the first half.

Wyant's seventh goal of the season came at the 35:25 mark as Matt Flanagan (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) crossed a ball into the box and found Wyant's head to give the Knights the 1-0 lead. Mount Saint Mary held a 10-2 shots advantage in the first half as well as a 2-0 corner kicks edge.

Mesoraca had another opportunty in the second half as he fired a shot but Silver was up to the task and knocked the ball over the crossbar to keep the lead to one. Maritime's best chance came at the 86:07 mark when a loose ball in the box found Anthony Sblendorio but Tyler Rapp (East Berne, N.Y.) turned it away for his lone save of the night. Guglielmo scored his first goal of the season with 29 seconds remaining in the half on a long pass from Dolan from the defensive zone.

Mount Saint Mary held a 10-1 advantage in the second half as well as a 4-0 corner kicks edge. The Knights concluded the day with a 20-3 edge in shots, including a 6-1 advantage in shots on goal and a 6-0 edge in corner kicks.

Dolan and Wyant each registered five shots on the evening as Sblendorio, Denton Henry and John Kilmeade had the three shots for Maritime. Rapp picked up the win in goal for the Knights, making one save on the night. Silver took the loss as he made four saves for the Privateers.

The win pushes the Knights to 8-4-1 overall and 5-0-1 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Mount is Senior Day as six seniors will be honored before the contest against Sarah Lawrence on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off with the Gryphons at Kaplan Field is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
