Knights Earn Third Straight Victory, Remain Unbeaten In Conference Play

Cannella, Rivera net two goals apiece

Old Westbury, N.Y. – Senior Chrissy Cannella (Cornwall, N.Y.) and junior Gina Rivera (Washingtonville, N.Y.) each scored twice and Maeve Ward (Warwick, N.Y.) and Haley Murphy (Massapequa, N.Y.) added markers as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team eased to its third straight win with a 6-0 road victory at Old Westbury.
 
Mount Saint Mary got on the board with the eventual game winning tally just 1:56 into the contest when Cannella potted her first of the day. She finished off a pass from Nikki Carter (Southington, Conn.) to give the Mount an early 1-0 lead.
 
The Knights would go on to score four more goals prior to halftime, with Rivera giving the Mount a 2-0 lead with an unassisted tally in the 16th minute. Cannella added her second of the game at the 31:31 mark when she finished off a passing play from Nicky Wurglics (Glendale, N.Y.) and Brittany Bornstad (Linden, N.J.) to give the Mount a 3-0 lead.
 
The Mount surged in front 5-0 prior to the intermission when Murphy and Ward scored just 28 seconds apart in the 43rd minute. Murphy found the top corner at 42:04 to give the Mount a 4-0 advantage before Ward worked her way into the box and behind the Panther defense at 42:32 to round out the first half scoring.
 
Mount Saint Mary controlled the play in the opening 45 minutes, outshooting Old Westbury 15-1 prior to halftime and taking each of the four corner kicks taken in the half.
 
The lone goal of the second stanza came in the 67th minute when Rivera tallied for the second time on the day and the fourth time in 2019. She buried a pass from Liz Ellsworth (Suffern, N.Y.) at 66:33 to give the Knights the final six-goal advantage.
 
Cannella scored for the third straight game for the Knights and pushed her team lead in goals to 12 and her team standard in points to 26. She finished the day with four attempts, including three shots on goal.
 
Rivera recorded her second multi-goal game in the last three outings and moved into second place on the team in both goals with four and points with nine. She closed the afternoon with a team-high six shots, putting three shots on net.
 
Ward recorded her third goal of the year and Murphy found the back of the net for the second time in 2019 for the Knights. Ellsworth assisted on her second goal of the year and Bornstad moved her team lead in assists on the year to five.
 
Junior Cyan Scott (Buena Park, Calif.) recorded her fourth shutout of the year and her second in the last three games with two stops on Wednesday. She lowered her goals against average on the season to 1.91 and raised her save percentage to .672. Yakeline Umanzor made four first half stops for the Panthers, with Moira Nolan making two saves in the second half.
 
Mount Saint Mary closed the day with a 19-4 advantage in overall shots and a 12-2 edge in shots on goal. The Knights took a single corner kick after halftime to finish the day with a 5-0 advantage in the category.
 
Wednesday's win improves the Mount's overall record to 5-8 and its conference record to 5-0. The Knights will now be off until October 16 when they travel to St. Joseph's-Brooklyn for a 7:00 p.m. kick-off with the Bears.
