Newburgh, N.Y. – Led by
Chrissy Cannella's (Cornwall, N.Y.) third hat trick of the season and her third straight multiple goal game, the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team recorded its fourth straight victory and remained unbeaten in conference play with a 3-0 home win over Manhattanville Saturday afternoon.
After being outshot 3-2 in the opening half, the Mount potted three straight goals in the second half to pull away for the victory. The Mount put just one shot on frame prior to halftime and saw
Cyan Scott (Buena Park, Calif.) turn away a pair of Valiant shots from inside the box to keep the game scoreless at the break.
Coming out of halftime, the Mount found the eventual game winner on a penalty kick. Cannella converted her fourth penalty in five chances at the 47:44 mark of the contest to post the game winning goal in each of the Mount's victories over the current winning streak.
Cannella doubled the Mount's lead just over 14 minutes later when she wired a free kick inside the left post. She started the play just outside the box and buried her 14
th goal of the season at the 61:46 mark of the tilt.
The senior midfielder closed out her third hat trick of the season in the 75
th minute when she tallied off a corner kick. She nudged the corner off the far post and in at 74:45 to give the Knights all the scoring they would need on the day.
Mount Saint Mary controlled play after halftime, outshooting Manhattanville 9-1 and taking each of the six corners awarded. For the game, the Mount posted an 11-4 edge in shots, a 6-3 advantage in shots on goal and controlled corner kicks 7-1.
Cannella led the Mount with five shots on the day and improved her team lead in goals to 15 and points to 32, with Alex Franceschi (Red Hook, N.Y.) getting off three attempts.
Brittany Bornstad (Linden, N.J.),
Haley Murphy (Massapequa, N.Y.) and
Allie Salamone (Sound Beach, N.Y.) each all finished with one shot for the Knights.
Scott recorded her fifth shutout of the season, recording a trio of saves in the win. She has lowered her goals against average to 1.75 on the season and raised her save percentage to .687. Alexa Pyatsky closed the day with three stops for the Valiants.
Saturday's win moves Mount Saint Mary to 6-8 overall on the season and to an unbeaten 6-0 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Knights is a trip to Purchase on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. kick-off with the Panthers.
