Purchase, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team extended its season-long winning streak to five games on Tuesday night with a convincing 5-0 road win at Purchase. Senior
Chrissy Cannella (Cornwall, N.Y.) and sophomore
Nikki Carter (Southington, Conn.) each finished the victory with a goal and an assist.
Mount Saint Mary scored the only goal of the opening 45 minutes with Carter opening the scoring in the game in the 10
th minute. She finished off her second goal of the season off a pass from Cannella at the 9:58 mark of the contest to give the Knights the only goal it would need on the night.
The Knights controlled play over the first half, outshooting Purchase 16-0 prior to halftime, adding an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks. Purchase goalkeeper, Amber Yarter, made seven first half stops to keep the Panthers to within a single shot at the intermission.
Mount Saint Mary doubled its lead early in the second half when Cannella potted her 16
th goal of the season. She buried a feed from
Haley Murphy (Massapequa, N.Y.) at 48:09 to extend her goal streak to five games.
Following the Cannella tally, the Knights pulled away with three goals in a nearly 30 minute stretch.
Liz Ellsworth (Suffern, N.Y.) finished off an assist from Carter in the 60
th minute for her first tally of the year, with
Maggie Zecca (Mountainside, N.J.) finding her second marker of the season in the 79
th minute.
Marilena Mangiaracina (Franklin Square, N.Y.) found the scoresheet for the first time in her career with just over three minutes left in regulation time, converting a pass from
Jackie Lindsay (Baldwin, N.Y.).
Cannella pushed her team lead in goals to 16 in the win and points to 35, while Carter moved into a tie for second on the team with nine points with her scoring output, adding her second game winning goal of the season. Cannella led the team in the game with six shots, with Murphy and
Ashley Hunter (North Babylon, N.Y.) each recording four attempts.
Cyan Scott (Buena Park, Calif.) posted her sixth shutout of the season and her fifth clean sheet in the last six games with a pair of stops on the night. The shutout lowers her goals against average to 1.62 on the year and raises her save percentage to .696. Yarter closed a busy night with 15 stops for the Panthers.
Mount Saint Mary finished the game with a commanding 35-4 advantage in shots, including a 20-2 edge in shots on goal. The Knights took five more corner kicks in the second half to round out the contest with a 13-0 advantage in the category.
Tuesday's win moves Mount Saint Mary to within a game of the .500 mark overall and 7-8 and improves its league record to a perfect 7-0. Next up for the Knights is a date with preseason favorite Farmingdale State on Thursday. Kick-off at Kaplan Field is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
