Chrissy Cannella (Cornwall, N.Y.) scored three straight first half goals and classmate
Julie Roethel (Monroe, N.Y.) tallied her third goal of the year as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team overcame and early deficit to post a 4-1 Skyline Conference victory over visiting College of Mount Saint Vincent Saturday afternoon. The victory gives the Mount consecutive wins for the first time in 2019.
The Dolphins got the scoring started early on Saturday when Kacey Brown put the visitors in front 1-0 in the sixth minute. Brown headed in a free-kick started by Madison Schultz at 5:04 of the contest to put the Knights in an early hole.
Following the Mount Saint Vincent tally, Cannella took over, scoring three times in an 18-minute stretch to put the Knights in front for good in the game. The equalizer came on a penalty kick at 22:19 and the eventual game winning goal came just under eight minutes later. Cannella's second goal came off a helper from
Ashley Hunter (North Babylon, N.Y.) at 30:17.
Cannella rounded out her stellar day with her third marker of the half in the 41
st minute. After
Nikki Carter (Southington, Conn.) played a ball across the box from the left wing, Cannella found the back of the net inside the left post to push the Mount in front 3-1 at the 40:01 mark of the contest.
After falling behind early, Mount Saint Mary finished the first half with a 15-3 advantage in shots, outshooting the Dolphins 14-2 after the opening goal. The Knights also dominated first half corner kicks 7-1.
The game remained 3-1 until the 76
th minute when Roethel found the back of the net for the third time in 2019. She broke through the Mount Saint Vincent backline and after an initial shot was stopped, she buried the rebound to close out the scoring at 75:42.
Cannella moved her team lead in goals to 10 and her team standard in points to 22 with a six-point afternoon. Roethel moved into a tie for second on the team in goals with her marker and Hunter picked up her first point of the season with the assist on the deciding goal. Carter moved into a tie for fourth on the team in points with her assist on the Mount's third tally.
Junior
Cyan Scott (Buena Park, Calif.) backstopped the Mount's second straight victory with three saves, including back-to-back stops early in the first half to keep the Knights within a shot of tying the score. Kora-Lynn McCullough finished the day with nine stops for the Dolphins.
Mount Saint Mary carried the run of play after allowing the early goal, finishing the day with a 28-5 advantage in overall shots and a 14-4 edge in shots on goal. The Mount took three more corner kicks after halftime to finish the day with a 10-3 advantage in the category.
Saturday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 4-8 overall on the season and to a perfect 4-0 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Knights is the first of two straight road games when they head to Old Westbury on Tuesday for a 3:30 p.m. kick-off with the Panthers.
