Gina Rivera (Washingtonville, N.Y.) scored twice and classmate
Alexa Franceschi (Red Hook, N.Y.) posted her first three points of the season on Wednesday as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team earned the top seed in the 2019 Skyline Conference Championship with a 3-0 victory over visiting St. Joseph's-L.I.
The Knights broke through with the eventual game winning goal on Wednesday in the 30
th minute when Rivera scored her first goal of the night and her fifth goal of the season. She took a pass from Franceschi and deposited it into the back of the net at 29:54 for the eventual deciding tally.
Rivera's first of the night was the only marker of the opening 45 minutes, but the Mount controlled the run of play, finishing the half with a 14-1 advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.
The game remained 1-0 until the 81
st minute when Franceschi found the back of the net for the first time in 2019. After
Liz Ellsworth (Suffern, N.Y.) was fouled in the box, Franceschi buried a penalty kick at the 80:25 mark of the contest to give the Mount an insurance goal and a 2-0 lead.
Just 65 seconds later, the Knights closed out the scoring in the game when Rivera finished off her second of the game and her sixth of the season. She received a feed from
Nicky Wurglics (Glendale, N.Y.) and floated a ball to the far corner at 83:30 to give the Mount its final three-goal advantage.
With her scoring output on Wednesday, Rivera pushed her point total on the season to 14 and tallied her first game winning goal of the year. Franceschi became the 19
th different Knight to find the scoring with her second half tally and Wurglics recorded her second helper of the year.
Eleven different players finished with at least one shot in Wednesday's victory for the Mount, with Fracneschi, Rivera,
Chrissy Cannella (Cornwall, N.Y.), and
Brittany Bornstad (Linden, N.J.) each recording a trio of attempts on the night.
Cyan Scott (Buena Park, Calif.) earned her eighth shutout of the season on Wednesday after making a single save in the game. Her counterpart from St. Joseph's, Juliana Cintron-Leonardo, made six stops for the Golden Eagles.
Mount Saint Mary finished the night with a commanding 20-2 advantage in shots, including a 9-1 edge in shots on frame. The Knights also dominated corner kicks, taking each of the seven awarded in the tilt.
Wednesday's win gets Mount Saint Mary to 9-9-1 overall on the season and gives them an unbeaten 9-0-1 mark in Skyline Conference play. The Knights will be off until November 6 when they host a Skyline Conference Championship Semifinal against the winner of the St. Joseph's-L.I. and Manhattanville First Round game to be contested on Saturday. Kick-off for the semifinal is set for 4:00 p.m.
