Connor Doyle (New Windsor, N.Y.) evened the score at 2-2 in the middle stages of the second half and sent the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team to a 3-2 victory at St. Joseph's-L.I. on Tuesday night with the game winner in the first minute of the second overtime period. The win secures the top seed in the upcoming Skyline Conference Championship for the Knights.
Following a scoreless first half that saw the Golden Eagles outshoot the Mount 6-5, the two teams combined for four goals in a 20-minute stretch in the second half. Senior
Joey Dolan (New Paltz, N.Y.) opened the scoring for the Knights in 53
rd minute when he potted a rebound off the cross bar to give the Mount a 1-0 lead at the 52:43 mark of the contest.
St. Joseph's responded with two tallies just 1:09 apart to move in front 2-1. Damian Duda finished off a feed from Rayneri Ruiz at 66:30 before Ruiz buried an assist from Alex Tarach at 67:39 to give the Golden Eagles the one goal edge.
The Golden Eagles maintained the one goal advantage until the 72
nd minute when Doyle leveled the score at 2-2 with his first goal of the night and his 13
th marker of the season. He collected a defensive giveaway and found an open net at 71:18 to knot the score at 2-2.
The game remained deadlocked through the remainder of regulation and the first overtime, before the Knights found the game winning in the opening minute of the second extra period. Sophomore
Matt Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.) fed a ball to Doyle who worked his way around the keeper and scored to a yawning net at 100:50 to send the Mount to its 13
th victory of the season.
With his two goals, Doyle pushed his team lead in markers to 14 and his team standard in points to 31. Dolan scored for the 12
th time in 2019 and pushed his point total to 28, while Wyant collected his third assist of the season and moved his point total on the year to 23.
Tyler Rapp (East Berne, N.Y.) earned the win in goal of the Mount with four saves, including three in the second stanza. Tyler Flaherty made five saves for the Golden Eagles in the loss.
Mount Saint Mary finished the game with a 16-13 advantage in shots, including 3-0 in the overtime period. The Knights posted an 8-6 edge in shots on frame in the contest and took six of the seven corner kicks on the night.
Tuesday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 13-5-1 overall on the season and closes the conference schedule at 10-0-1. The Knights will be off until November 6 when they host the winner of the Old Westbury and Farmingdale State First Round game. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
