Knights Sweep St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn, Collect Second Straight Conference Win

Riddle puts away 17 kills against Bears

Newburgh, N.Y. – Freshman Grace Riddle (Wantagh, N.Y.) led all players with 17 kills as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball team improved its standing in the Skyline Conference with a 25-17, 25-20, 25-10 sweep of visiting St. Joseph's-Brooklyn on Wednesday night.

Following a back-and-forth start to the opening stanza, the Mount put together a 7-1 run towards the latter end of the frame to pull in front 20-13 on a kill from Danielle Kralik (Bedford Hills, N.Y.). The Bears climbed back to within 25-17, but a kill from Riddle and two straight errors from St. Joseph's sent the Mount to the one set advantage.

The second set began in similar fashion as the first, with the Knights unable to pull in front by more than four points until the middle stages of the stanza. A six-point spurt, sparked by a trio of Riddle winners and a pair of Alyssa Barbara (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) service aces, sent the Knights in front 18-9. The Bears used a six-point run of their own to claw back to within 22-18, but a service error ended the threat and gave the Mount a 2-0 advantage.

Mount Saint Mary controlled the third set, jumping out to a 9-2 lead and allowed consecutive points to the Bears just twice in the frame. An 8-1 run produced an 18-6 lead and following back-to-back tallies from the Bears, the Mount took advantage of a St. Joseph's miscue and a Riddle ace to close out the sweep.

The Mount hit a season-high .267 on the night, committing only 11 miscues in 90 swings. The Knights hit at least .200 in each of the three sets on Wednesday, including an efficient .333, committing just three attack errors, in the middle frame.

Riddle continued her strong play for the Mount, putting away 17 kills and hitting a blistering .500 in 28 attempts. She closed out a strong all-around night with seven digs and five service aces for the Knights.

Kralik wrapped up the win with six kills with Danielle Guarasci (Plainview, N.Y.) finishing up with four winners and a block.

Emily Mazzurco (Middletown, N.Y.) and Fran Cammarata (Carmel, N.Y.) split the setting duties, combing for 30 helpers on the night. Mazzurco handed out 18 assists and added two aces, while Cammarata helped on 12 kills and added a winner of her own. Jenny Picarillo (Troy, N.Y.) and Barbara finished with seven digs apiece with Barbara contributing a trio of aces.

St. Joseph's was led by eight kills from Briana Marrazzo who hit .400 on the night and lifted six digs. Kaitlyn Intindola handed out 17 assists for the Bears and joined Carol Melo with a match-high 10 digs.

Mount Saint Mary finished the night with a 35-22 advantage in kills and dominated the service game with a 15-2 advantage in aces. The Knights produced the only block of the night with Guarasci and Hydo each picking up an assist.

Monday's win improves Mount Saint Mary to 9-16 overall on the season and to 4-5 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Knights is a non-conference tri-match with William Paterson and John Jay on Saturday. Matches are scheduled for begin at 11:00 with the Knights and Pioneers.
