Bronxville, N.Y. – Led by a career-high 26 kills from freshman
Grace Riddle (Wantagh, N.Y.), the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball got back into the win column and snapped an eight match losing streak with a hard fought 25-17, 25-16, 22-25, 23-25, 15-5 road win at Sarah Lawrence Monday night.
The Knights got off to a quick start on Monday, hitting a blistering .344 as a team in the opening stanza. The Mount overcame an 11-9 deficit in the first set, using a 7-1 run to push in front 15-14 and then a closing 8-2 spurt to close out the opening set victory. Riddle sparked the final run with four winners for the Mount.
Mount Saint Mary jumped in front by two sets after holding the Gryphons to a -.114 attack percentage in the second frame. The Knights put together a four-point run, keyed by a Riddle kill and an ace from
Renee Hydo (Bethpage, N.Y.) to grab a 14-7 advantage and later used a five point spurt to pull in front 19-10 keyed by a pair of winners from Riddle. After the Gryphons pulled to within six points late in the frame, the Mount scored four of the final six points of the set to move in front 2-0.
Sarah Lawrence stormed back with victories in sets three and four, totaling 25 kills over the two sets and forced the Mount to commit 14 attack errors. Sarah Lawrence used a 7-2 run to close out the third frame and tallied four of the final five points in the fourth stanza to even the match at 2-2.
Mount Saint Mary jumped in front early in the deciding fifth set with a 7-2 run keyed by two winners from Riddle and a service ace from
Klaire Wall (Point Pleasant, N.J.). The Gryphons climbed to within 8-5, but the Mount finished off their first win since September 28 with the final seven points, including a pair of kills from
Danielle Kralik (Bedford Hills, N.Y.),
Riddle had a big night for the Mount, surpassing her previous career-high in kills by two while hitting an efficient .339 in 62 swings. It marked the sixth straight match she has reached double-figures in kills and the second time in 2019 she has eclipsed 20 kills in a contest. Riddle finished off a strong all-around match with 13 digs, six service aces and a pair of total blocks.
Kralik recorded a season-high 13 kills for the Mount in the win to go along with five digs with Hydo putting away nine kills and adding eight digs.
Senior
Emily Mazzurco (Middletown, N.Y.) led all players with 33 assists on the night, adding two kills, four aces and six digs.
Alyssa Barbara (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) reached 20 digs in a match for the sixth time on Monday, adding two aces with
Jenny Picarillo (Troy, N.Y.) and Wall chipping in with 12 and 14 digs, respectively.
Sarah Lawrence was led by 10 kills from Clarise Steiner who closed a double-double with a match-high 30 digs. Isabel Pecroa handed out 30 assists for the Gryphons and finished off a double-double with 17 digs.
Mount Saint Mary rounded out the night with a 55-39 advantage in kills on the night and hit .201 as a team, holding Sarah Lawrence to a .127 effort. The Mount dominated the service game with a 19-8 advantage in aces while total team blocks in the match were even at 2-2.
Monday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 8-16 overall on the season and to 3-5 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Knights is a home contest with St. Joseph's-Brooklyn Wednesday night. First serve with the Bears is set for 7:00 p.m.
