Old Westbury, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team cruised to a 5-0 road victory over Skyline foe Old Westbury on Wednesday afternoon. Sophomore
Connor Doyle (New Windsor, N.Y.) led the Knights with a strong five point performance and classmate
Matt Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.) scored twice to move into a three-way tie for the team lead in goals.
Mount Saint Mary's offense got going in an hurry on Wednesday as the Knights scored the first goal of the game just six and a half minutes into the contest. Wyant scored the eventual game-winner at the 6:29 mark of the first half on a feed from Doyle in the box as a heavy rain shower ensued at Old Westbury.
As the rain cleared, Doyle scored his first goal of the game when he headed in a cross from
Christopher Maggi (Franklin Square, N.Y.) that just sneaked past the keeper at the 28:35 mark. Doyle quickly followed it up with his second goal of the contest when he received a pass from
Matt Flanagan (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) in the 41st minute to give the Mount a 3-0 lead at half.
The Knights dominated the first half as they outshot the Panthers 11-2 in the first half as Old Westbury held the lone corner kick of the first 45 minutes.Â
Early in the second half, Wyant scored his sixth goal of the season as he curled one in the back of the net off a free kick at the 55:02 mark. The Mount tallied its fifth goal of the contest when
Joseph Mesoraca (Oceanside, N.Y.) scored his first goal of the year off a header on a free kick from
Tyler Vermilyea (Rosendale, N.Y.) in the 83rd minute.
Old Westbury finished the second half with an 8-4 advantage in shots as well as a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. Mount Saint Mary finished the game with a 15-10 edge in shots including 7-5 in shots on goal.
Joey Dolan (Highland, N.Y.),
Jonathan Schefer (Greenlawn, N.Y.) and Wyant each registered three shots in the contest as Michael Gilligan and Grixo Moreira each had three shots for the Panthers.
Tyler Rapp (East Berne, N.Y.) earned the win in goal, making five saves in 75:33 minutes of action.
Sean Madden (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) made an apperance in relief for the Knights. James Perciballi took the loss for Old Westbury as he made two saves in goal.
Mount Saint Mary moves to 6-4-1 overall on the season and improves to 3-0-1 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Knights is a trip to Riverdale, N.Y. to take on Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday afternoon. Kick-off with the Dolphins is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
