Patchogue, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball team fell for the eighth straight time on Saturday afternoon following a hard fought 20-25, 20-25, 18-25 road defeat at St. Joseph's-L.I. Freshman
Grace Riddle (Wantagh, N.Y.) finished the day with a team-high 12 kills.
The Knights got off to a good start in the opening frame on Saturday, ripping off a 9-0 run to surge in front 11-5. Kills from
Klaire Wall (Point Pleasant, N.J.) and
Danielle Guarasci (Plainview, N.Y.) and a pair of aces from Riddle sparked the run for the Mount.
The Mount maintained the lead in the first set until a late 8-0 run from the Golden Eagles pushed them in front 20-17. The Knights got back to within 21-20, but a four-point spurt from St. Joseph's, led by two kills from Amanda Goldstein an ace from Kaitlin Williams, pushed the Golden Eagles out to a 1-0 lead.
The second set was another back-and-forth affair that saw the Knights grab a quick 5-2 lead on a
Tara Greeley (Stony Point, N.Y.) winner. St. Joseph's used a four-point run to jump in front 21-15 and used three Mount Saint Mary miscues late in the frame to pull in front by two sets.
Mount Saint Mary grabbed an 8-7 lead in the third set following an
Alyssa Barbara (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) service ace and later used back-to-back St. Joseph's miscues to grab a 12-11 advantage. The Golden Eagles answered with two straight points to take the lead back and put together a seven-point run to move in front 21-14. Jessica Young put the match away following back-to-back points from the Mount that brought them to within 24-18.
Riddle finished the day with 12 of the team's 19 kills, adding seven digs, a block and half of the team's six service aces. Guarasci and
Renee Hydo (Bethpage, N.Y.) each posted a pair of kills, with Guarasci adding five blocks and Hydo lifting five digs.
Emily Mazzurco (Middletown, N.Y.) handed out 14 assists for the Knights, while Barbara led the team with 14 digs to go along with a pair of service aces.
St. Joseph's received 10 kills apiece from Young and Goldstein with each player hitting better than .300 on the day. Brionna Silva led all players with 29 assists, while Danielle Senacal posted a match-high 19 digs. Goldstein and Williams finished the day with four blocks apiece for the Golden Eagles.
Overall, St. Joseph's held the advantage in the match in kills 35-19, service aces 10-6 and total team blocks 7-2. St. Joseph's hit .178 for the match, while the Knights were limited to a -.039 attack percentage.
Saturday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 7-16 overall on the season and to 2-5 against Skyline Conference rivals. Next up for the Mount is trip to Sarah Lawrence for a 7:00 p.m. match with the Gryphons on Monday night.
