Women's Basketball Sinks Mount Saint Vincent, Wins Sixth Straight

Keenan nets a career-high 16 points in the victory

Newburgh, N.Y. - Freshman Annie Keenan (Nesconset, N.Y.) netted a career-high as she and senior Kayla Cleare (West Hempstead, N.Y.) each finished with 16 points to lead the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team to their sixth straight victory, defeating the College of Mount Saint Vincent 73-53. 

The Dolphins jumped out to a quick 11-3 lead as Aria Rheams and Dez Brown combined for eight points in the first four minutes. After the Dolphins extended the lead to 13-5, the Knights responded with a 11-0 run behind five points from Keenan, including a three-pointer, that put the Knights ahead by three at the end of the quarter.

The Knights pushed their lead to eight in the second quarter following another Keenan triple on an assist from Katie Smith (Goshen, N.Y.), but the Dolphins cut the lead to five on a Brown layup as the Mount took a 30-25 lead into the halftime intermission.

The Mount began the third quarter with a 12-2 spurt behind six points from Cleare and another Keenan three-pointer. Keenan finished with four triples on the afternoon. Following two free throws from Leah Pinili, the Knights finished the quarter on 16-1 run to end the quarter outscoring the Dolphins 28-5 to put them in front by 28 following the third period.

The Dolphins finished the fourth quarter with a 23-15 advantage as Julia Lavin (Ledyard, Conn.) finished the quarter with five points off the bench.

Keenan finished the contest 4-for-6 from the field, including 4-for-5 behind the arc and a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw line. Cleare finished 8-for-12 from the field and Smith added 13 points and four assists on 5-for-8 shooting. Cleare also chipped in seven rebounds and four blocks while Keenan has four rebounds and three assists. Toriana Tabasco finished the afternoon with four steals.

Rheams finished with a game-high 22 points and six rebounds wile Dez Brown had 10 points and six rebounds. Yamilersy Reyes had four assists for the Dolphins.

The Knights finished the day shooting 46.0-percent, including 56.3-percent in the second half. The Mount had 18 assists on 29 made field goals and had 11 steals in the contest. Mount Saint Mary held Mount Saint Vincent to 37.0-percent and forced 22 turnovers. The Knights won the points off turnovers battle 20-10 and outscored the Dolphins in the paint 32-22.

Saturday's win pushes the Mount to 14-4 overall and 11-0 in conference play. The Knights return to action as they travel to Purchase to take on the Panthers on Thursday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
