Newburgh, N.Y. – Playing its second straight home game to open the season on Sunday, the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team was blanked by Vassar, 4-0. Sophomore
Jakup Myrtja (UlCinj, Montenegro) made six saves in goal, while a trio of Knights recorded one shot in the game.
Vassar opened the scoring early, when Tyler Gilmore struck with the eventual game winning tally in the third minute. Quinn Tunnell added a goal in the 36
th minute to push Vassar in front by two goals heading into halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Brewers expanded their lead to three early in the second half when Kevin Baliat scored an unassisted goal in the 51
st minute. Vassar closed out the scoring in the game just over 12 minutes later when Baliat struck with his second of the game at the 61:52 mark.
Mark Infante picked up the win for Vassar in goal without making a save, while Myrtja finished with a season-high total in stops. Sophomore
Tyler Rapp (East Berne, N.Y.) saw his first action of the season, playing the final 28:08.
Vassar outshot the Mount 14-3 overall in the game and 10-0 in shots on target.
Matthew Wyant (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.),
Tyler Vermilyea (Rosendale, N.Y.) and
Andrew Marcantonio (Bristol, Conn.) all finished with attempts for the Knights.
At 1-1 overall on the season, the Knights will hit the road for the first tie on Wednesday when they travel to Bard. Kick-off with the Raptors is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
