Men’s Soccer Battles Past Mount Saint Vincent In Double Overtime

Wyant puts away PK game winner

Newburgh, N.Y. – Freshman Matthew Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.) put away a penalty kick in the second overtime as the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team posted a hard fought 1-0 win over visiting College of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday afternoon.
 
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie through over 100 minutes of action before the Mount finally broke through with the game winner. Following a foul in the box, Wyant stepped into a penalty chance and buried it into the left corner at the 104:21 mark of the contest.
 
The goal was Wyant's third of the season, moving him into a four-way tie for first on the team in goals. It marked his first career game winning goal and pushed his team lead on the season in points to 10.
 
Mount Saint Mary held a convincing 19-4 advantage in shots through regulation time, including a 12-1 edge in the second half. The Mount outshot the Dolphins 7-0 in the two overtime periods, capped by Wyant's marker.
 
Eight different Knights finished the game with a shot, led by six attempts each from Matthew Fuge (Avon, Conn.) and Connor Doyle (New Windsor, N.Y.). Wyant and Joseph Mesoraca (Oceanside, N.Y.) each rounded out the day with four shots for the Knights.
 
Tyler Rapp (East Berne, N.Y.) picked up his first shutout of the season in the win, making just one save for the Mount. Padelis Astrinidis had a busy day for the visitors, stopping eight shots in the loss.
 
For the game, Mount Saint Mary posted a 26-4 advantage in shots and held a 9-1 edge in shots on goal. The Knights dominated corner kicks in the game, taking eight of the nine awarded.
 
At 6-4 overall on the season and 2-0 in Skyline Conference play, Mount Saint Mary is back in action again on Tuesday when it travels to Sarah Lawrence. Kick-off at Fleming Field in Yonkers, N.Y. is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
