Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Knights Overwhelm St. Joseph’s-Brooklyn In Skyline Opener

Fuge scores twice in victory

New York, N.Y. – Senior Matthew Fuge (Avon, Conn.) scored twice as the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team got back into the win column on Wednesday night with a 6-0 road win at St. Joseph's-Brooklyn in the team's conference opener.

The Knights wasted little time jumping in front of the Bears, scoring four times prior to halftime. Fuge scored the eventual game winning goal in the 15th minute with Fred Stark (Hollis, N.Y.), Matthew Wyant (Beacon, N.Y.) and Christopher Maggi (Franklin Square, N.Y.) all scoring inside of five minutes of each other late in the first half.

Mount Saint Mary outshot St. Joseph's 15-1 in the opening stanza and took all five corner kicks in the first half.

Coming out of halftime, Fuge potted his second goal of the game just over five minutes into the second period and Connor Lynch (Clifton Park, N.Y.) finished off his third goal of the season at the 57:34 mark of the contest to close out the scoring in the game.

With his scoring output on Wednesday, Fuge moves into a three way tie with Lynch and Connor Doyle (New Windsor, N.Y.) for the team lead in goals with three. Two of his three markers on the season have proved to be game winners for the Knights.

With his second goal of the season, Wyant moved back into the team lead in points with eight in his rookie campaign with Maggi and Stark each finding the back of the net for the first time on the season.

The Mount used a trio of goalkeepers to post the shutout against the Bears, with Tyler Rapp (East Berne, N.Y.) making the start and earning his first win of the season. Jakup Myrtja (Ulcinj, Montenegro) played just over 32 minutes in the second half, while Sean Madden (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) saw his second action of the season. Neither of the three keepers was forced to make a save, while St. Joseph's net minder, Alejandro Oliveros, made 13 stops for the Bears.

Mount Saint Mary wrapped up the win with a 25-5 advantage in overall shots and a 19-0 edge in shots on target. Corner kicks also went to the Knights in the tilt, 8-2.

Wednesday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary to 5-4 overall on the season and to 1-0 in Skyline Conference play. Next up for the Knights is a home league contest against the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Saturday. Kick-off with the Dolphins is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
