Gina Rivera (Washingtonville, N.Y.) broke a scoreless tie late in regulation time to give the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team a 1-0 win over visiting Manhattanville on Tuesday night.
Rivera scored her team leading fifth goal of the season in the 85
th minute to get the Mount on the board and give the Knights their second straight victory. Rivera one timed a feed from
Brittany Bornstad (Linden, N.J.) into the left corner at the 84:22 mark of the contest.
The goal came on the team's fifth shot of the second half as the Mount outshot the Valiants 5-1 after halftime. The visitors' only attempt in the second half came in the opening minutes when Joanna Karp was denied by
Cassidy Rykowski (Sloatsburg, N.Y.).
Mount Saint Mary finished the game with a 9-6 advantage in shots after being outshot in the first half 5-4. The Knights took seven of the 11 corner kicks in the contest, including four of the five taken in the second half.
Rivera pushed her team lead in goals on the season to five and is the only Knight with at least 10 points with a team-high 12. Bornstad picked up her team leading third assist on the goal and is third on the team with five points.
Rykowski earned her second win of the season on Tuesday in relief duty of starter
Liz Ellsworth. She made a pair of saves in the combined shutout, with Ellsworth making two big stops early before exiting. Manhattanville keeper, Alexa Pyatsky made six saves, including two big stops in the second half to keep the game scoreless.
Tuesday's win moves Mount Saint Mary back over .500 overall at 5-4-1 on the season. The Knights close out a three game home stand and return to Skyline Conference action on Saturday when their play host to Sarah Lawrence. Kick-off with the Gryphons is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
