Julia DeSantis (Islip, N.Y.) and sophomore
Alexa Franceschi (Red Hook, N.Y.) scored first half goals on the Saturday as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team got back into the win column with an impressive 2-0 win over visiting New York University.
The Knights broke a scoreless tie in the 18
th minute when DeSantis found the back of the net for the second time in her rookie season.
Brittany Bornstad (Linden, N.J.) started a corner kick and found DeSantis' foot in the box at the 17:34 mark of the contest to give the Knights the only scoring the would need in the game.
Mount Saint Mary got an insurance goal late in the opening stanza when Franceschi cashed in her first goal of the season in the 43
rd minute. Bornstad started another corner kick when
Maggie-Ann Zecca (Mountainside, N.J.) found Franceschi with the team's second goal of the day at the 42:43 mark of the tilt.
Mount Saint Mary outshot NYU 6-5 in the opening 45 minutes and took advantage of both of their corner kicks, despite allowing five to the visitors before halftime.
The Violets came out strong in the second frame, hitting the post in the opening moments of the second half and earning a pair of corner kicks over the first 10 minutes of the period. Freshman
Liz Ellsworth (Suffern, N.Y.) was forced to make one save in the second half, with DeSantis nearly scoring her second of the game with the Mount's best opportunity after halftime at the 58:36 mark of the tilt.
DeSantis finished the day with her second goal of the season and with each goal being a game winner. Franceschi became the ninth different Knight to score a goal on the season, with Zecca picking up her first career point.
Ellsworth returned to the net for the Knights for the first time since September 9 and picked up her third shutout of the season. She moved to 3-2-1 on the season after making four stops on the day. Meghan Marhan posted a trio of saves in the loss for the Violets.
Mount Saint Mary finished the day with a slim 8-7 edge in shots, including a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal. NYU dominated corner kicks on the day, 7-3.
Saturday's win pushes Mount Saint Mary back to the .500 mark overall at 4-4-1 on the season. The Knights return to action on September when they play the middle game of a three match home stand against Manhattanville. Kick-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
