Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team continued its home schedule on Tuesday night, suffering a 4-0 non-conference loss to visiting Middlebury. The defeat drops the Mount to 4-4 on the season, while the Panthers improved to 2-1-1.
The visitors jumped out in front in the early going on Tuesday and went on to score four first half goals. Raffi Barsamian potted the eventual game winning goal for the Panthers in the ninth minute when he buried a straightway shot from 40 yards out. He rifled a shot that hit the bottom of the bar and found the back of the net off a feed from Drew Goulart at the 8:49 mark of the match.
Middlebury doubled its lead just under three minutes later when Ben Potter completed a passing play from Daniel O'Grady and Brandon Reid before he made the score 3-0 at the 39:15 mark of the contest, burying a free kick from just outside the box.
The Panthers closed out the scoring in the game late in the opening stanza when Fazl Shaikh took a cross from Shams Mohajerani at 43:22 and tucked a shot into the far post to give the visitors a commanding four goal halftime advantage.
Middlebury outshot the Mount 8-1 prior to the break on Tuesday and took both corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes.
Shots in the second frame on Tuesday went to Middlebury by a slim 3-2 margin, but neither team got into the scoring column after halftime. The Panthers took three of the four corner kicks awarded in the second 45 minutes.
Sophomore
Tyler Rapp (East Berne, N.Y.) made his third start in goal on the season for the Knights and made two stops in the loss. Matthew Hyer picked up the win for Middlebury with a pair of stops in the victory.
Middlebury finished the night with an 11-3 advantage in shots, including a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. Corner kicks in the contest also went to the Panthers 5-1.
Matthew Fuge (Avon, Conn.),
Joseph Mesoraca (Oceanside, N.Y.) and
Bereket Watts (Addis Abuba, Ethiopia) recorded the only attempts for the Mount on the night.
Mount Saint Mary returns to action on September 26 when it opens Skyline Conference play at St. Joseph's-Brooklyn. Kick-off with the Bears is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
