Madison, N.J. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's soccer team overcame a two goal deficit with a four goal second half on Saturday to score a 4-2 road non-conference win at FDU-Florham. Freshman
Connor Doyle (New Windsor, N.Y.) sparked the comeback with a pair of tallies for the Knights.
Mount Saint Mary found itself trailing by two goals following two late strikes from the Devils in the first half. The Knights were outshot in the opening stanza 9-5 and trailed following a Salvatore Vassalo goal in the 31
st minute and a Nick Halpin tally just over 10 minutes later.
Coming out of the break, the Knights sliced their deficit in half on Doyle's first of the game in the 57
th minute and drew even with his second tally of the afternoon just over five minutes later. His first goal of the game came off a header and his equalizing tally was chipped into an open goal off a pass from
Christopher Maggi (Franklin Square, N.Y.).
The Mount got the deciding goal in the 78
th minute when senior
Bobby Caronia (Ossining, N.Y.) found the back of the net for the first time in his career. He curled in a shot from just outside the box at the 77:01 mark of the contest to put the Knights in front for good in the game.
Mount Saint Mary received an insurance tally in the final 10 minutes when
Tyler Vermilyea (Rosendale, N.Y.) scored his first goal as a Knight. He pounded in a rebound off a penalty kick from
Joseph Mesoraca (Oceanside, N.Y.) at the 81:08 mark of the tilt to seal the victory.
Sophomore
Tyler Rapp (East Berne, N.Y.) made the start in goal on Saturday for the Knights and finished the day with three stops in the first half.
Jakup Myrtja (Ulcinj, Montenegro) came on in the second half to stop seven shots to earn the victory in relief.
FDU-Florham finished the day with a 19-17 edge in overall shots and a 12-9 advantage in shots on goal. The Devils also controlled corner kicks on the day, 5-1.
At 4-3 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary returns home on Tuesday to play host to Middlebury. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
