Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Knights Dealt Loss By Visiting Rutgers-Newark

Doyle, Wyant produce two shots each

Newburgh, N.Y. – Returning home for the first time since opening weekend, the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team suffered a 3-0 non-conference loss to Rutgers-Newark on Wednesday night. Two Mount Saint Mary goalkeepers combined for six saves in the contest.

After a tightly contested first 45 minutes that featured only three combined shots, the Scarlet Raiders turned up the heat coming out of halftime, outshooting the Knights 16-4 in the second stanza.

The eventual game winning goal came off the foot of Franco Catania, his first of two goals in the game, in the 64th minute and the visitors added tallies in the 71st and 79th minutes to pull away for the three goal triumph.

Catania curled in the game winner from well outside the box on the left wing and added his second of the game when he finished off a feed from Kevin Ocampo at the 78:12 mark of the match. With a hand in all three tallies, Catania assisted on the middle goal of the game, a Joe Alba marker, at the 70:59 mark of the contest.

Mount Saint Mary managed just five shots in the game and was outshot 18-5 overall on the night and 9-2 in shots on goal. Freshmen Matthew Wyant (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) recorded a pair of shots and had the Mount's bets scoring chance early in the tilt, with Connor Doyle (New Windsor, N.Y.) getting off two more attempts and the other shot on goal.

Jakup Myrtja (Ulcinj, Montenegro) made the start in goal for the Knights and made one stop in the first half, with Tyler Rapp (East Berne, N.Y.) coming on to play the second stanza and making five saves. Christian Andrach got the shutout win for Rutgers-Newark with two saves.

At 3-3 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary returns to the road on Saturday when it travels to FDU-Florham. Kick-off with the Devils is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
