Knights, Valiants Play To 9-9 Tie

Teams combine for 17 hits

Purchase, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team returned to action on Tuesday and played Manhattanville to a 9-9 tie. Six different Knights finished with a hit, led by three safeties from freshmen Steven Bauer (Goshen, N.Y.) Steven Mirra (Wallingford, Conn.).

Mount Saint Mary opened a 9-0 lead in the game, scoring two runs in the fourth and fifth inning and five times in the top of the sixth. Manhattanville rallied with runs in its four at-bats, scoring two runs in the six, seventh and eighth innings and three runs in the home half of the ninth.

The Knights got the scoring started with a bases load walk from Matthew Kozireski (Montgomery, N.Y.) and a sacrifice fly from Justin Maldonado (Cold Spring, N.Y.) in the fourth. The Mount doubled its lead an inning later when Bauer delivered a run scoring single.

Mount Saint Mary erupted for five runs in the sixth on just three hits. Kevin Colgan (Islip, N.Y.) produced a run when he was hit with a pitch with the bases loaded and Tom Huvane (Eastchester, N.Y.) followed with a walk to drive in a run. Bauer drove in his second run of the game with a base hit in the inning and after a run crossed on a double play, Braden Perry (Brockport, N.Y.) drove in a run with a single to close out the scoring in the game for the Mount.

Manhattanville started its comeback in the home half of the sixth with a Peter Iannarilli run scoring single. Luke Scoggins later drove in a run in the eight with a base hit. The other seven runs for the Valiants were produced without the benefit of a hit, including two hit by pitch and a pair of sacrifice flies.

Mirra continued his steady freshman campaign by going 3-for-6 with a run scored, Bauer finishing up 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Joe Galasso (Plainview, N.Y.) rounded out a trio of Knights with multiple hits with a 2-for-2 effort with a run scored.

James McCleary (Floral Park, N.Y.) made the start on the mound and worked 5.2 innings, allowing one earned run on four hits. Michael DiGiovanni (Shirley, N.Y.) was the only one of three relievers to work a scoreless outing, recording one strikeout in 1.0 inning.

Tuesday's tie stops a five game winning streak for the Knights, but runs in unbeaten string to six games. At 21-8-1, the Mount will return to action Wednesday against NJCU. First pitch for the home tilt is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
