Newburgh, N.Y. – Senior Danny Kuglar (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) scored four times, including twice in the final 5:49 of regulation time, and
Christopher Doerr (Pleasantville, N.Y.) made eight saves as the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team won its third straight game with a 9-8 home victory over Vassar.
Neither team held a lead larger than one goal throughout the contest, with the Knights overcoming a 5-4 halftime deficit. After allowing four second quarter goals to the Brewers on Wednesday, the Mount clamped down in the second half and allowed only three more goals over the final 30 minutes of action.
Mount Saint Mary held a 2-1 lead after 15 minutes, but saw Vassar score twice in the final 3:05 of the second period, including a James Thomas tally with two seconds left in the frame, to give the Brewers the slim 5-4 edge at the intermission.
Vassar dominated face-offs in the first half, 10-1, and held a 16-7 advantage in groundballs at the break. The Brewers held a 24-9 advantage in shots at halftime, while the Knights went a perfect 8-for-8 in first half clearing chances.
Mount Saint Mary got the game even early in the third period on a
Dylan De Meo (Franklin Square, N.Y.) marker and after Thomas gave the Brewers the lead back late in the frame, Kugler found the back of the cage with his 17
th goal of the season under a minute later to knot the score at 3-3 after three periods.
The Knights grabbed the lead on a
Ryan Maraio (Staten Island, N.Y.) man-up tally early in the final stanza, before Vassar scored consecutive goals just over a minute apart to gain an 8-7 lead with 8:37 left to play in regulation.
Kugler got the Mount even again with just under six minutes left and after Vassar had a goal disallowed, Kugler potted the game winner with the man advantage at the 3:18 mark of the fourth period to close out the scoring and seal the victory.
Kugler ran his team lead in goals to 19 with his four goal output and added two groundballs in the win. De Meo scored twice and assisted on a third goal with Maraio finishing up a two-point night with a goal and a helper.
Peter Beidl (Clifton Park, N.Y.) paced the Mount with a pair of caused turnovers in the game with
Kenneth Gallagher (Northport, N.Y.) winning three face-offs and securing a pair of groundballs for the Knights.
Vassar was led by four goals from Thomas with Matthew Lowrey going 15-for-18 in face-offs and adding 12 groundballs.
Doerr wrapped up the night with eight saves in goal for the Knights and led the team with six groundballs. Matthew Boyd also made eight saves on the night for Vassar and secured five groundballs in the game.
Overall, Vassar finished the game with the edge in shots 36-29, while the Knights posted a 17-16 advantage in shots on goal. The Brewers won 16 of the 19 face-offs contested and held a 27-20 advantage in groundballs. The Knights were an efficient 14-for-15 in clears and scored twice with the man advantage.
At 3-1 overall on the season, Mount Saint Mary puts its three game winning streak on the line Saturday afternoon with a non-conference game against Salve Regina. Face-off at Carey High School in Franklin Square, N.Y. is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
