Franklin Square, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team saw its three game winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon with a 14-9 non-conference loss to Salve Regina. Senior
Dylan De Meo (Franklin Square, N.Y.) finished the day with a team-high five points.
After falling behind by two goals in the early going, the Knights fought back to even the score at 2-2 on consecutive goals from De Meo and
Michael Romanik (Hicksville, N.Y.) just over a minute apart in the middle stages of the opening period.
Salve Regina answered with three of the final four goals of the opening stanza, with Brendan Kelly scoring twice for the Seahawks in the final five minutes after Dany Kugler's (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) 20
th goal of the season with just over six minutes left in the first quarter.
The Seahawks potted three of the four goals in the second frame to carry an 8-4 lead into halftime on Saturday. After
Tristan Earle (Millrift, Pa.) brought the Mount to within 7-4 late in the opening period, Salve Regina got a goal from Kelly with 2:20 left before the break to spread the lead back to four goals after 30 minutes.
Salve Regina outshot Mount Saint Mary 20-16 in the first half, including 16-10 in shots on goal. Each team picked up 20 groundballs in the opening 30 minutes, with the Knights going 7-for-10 in clearing chances and 10-for-14 in face-offs.
De Meo got the Knights back to within three goals after opening the scoring in the third period, but Salve Regina moved in front by five goals following tallies from Marco Mongelli and Pat Leary. The Knights would get to within three goals one more time, on a
Nicholas Graziano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) marker with 2:47 left in the third, but three goals from the Seahawks to close the frame saw them surge in front 13-7.
Mount Saint Mary scored two of the three goals in the final frame, with Kugler potting his team leading 21
st and Granziano scoring his second of the game, but the Knights were not able to get closer than four goals in the final 15 minutes.
De Meo finished with at least five points in a game for the third time this season, assisting on three tallies and scoring two more. He moved into the team lead in points with 23 and chipped in with four groundballs and a caused turnover.
Graziano and Kugler each scored a pair of goals in the game with
Ryan Maraio (Staten Island, N.Y.) rounding out the day with a goal and an assist. Freshman
Danny Marshall (Oceanside, N.Y.) finished off a solid day with three groundballs and a pair of caused turnovers.
Senior
Christopher Doerr (Pleasantville, N.Y.) made a season-high 12 saves in the game, adding two groundballs. His counterpart from Salve Regina, Matt D'Amore, finished with 13 stops in the win.
The Seahawks received a five-point game from Leary, who posted four goals, with Mike Mongelli leading the way with seven groundballs and two caused turnovers.
Salve Regina finished with a 43-30 advantage in overall shots and a 26-22 edge in shots on goal. The Seahawks secure nine more groundballs than the Knights, while the Mount won 18 of the 26 face-offs taken, with
Kenneth Gallagher (Northport, N.Y.) winning all 18 draws and collecting six groundballs.
At 3-2 on the season, Mount Saint Mary hits the road for a midweek contest at Union on Tuesday. Face-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
