Danny Kugler (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) scored two goals and matched the program's career record in the category on Wednesday, but the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Lacrosse team dropped its second straight decision with a 20-3 road loss at Union.
The Knights allowed at least four goals in each period on Wednesday and were held off the board until Kugler potted his 22
nd goal of the season with 8:26 left before halftime. He scored his second of the game and the 135
th goal of his career with just under four minute left before halftime as the Knights trailed 10-2 at the intermission.
Union controlled the first half, holding a 33-8 advantage in shots and a 19-4 edge in shots on goal. The Dutchmen picked up 21 groundballs in the first half compared to 12 for the Knights and finished the half with a 9-4 edge in face-offs.
Union scored the first eight goals of the second half to open an 18-2 lead before
Nicholas Graziano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) tallied with the man advantage with 6:17 left to play to close out the scoring in the game for the Knights.
With his two goals, Kugler ties Andrew Pullen for the program standard with 135 tallies. He rounded out a solid all-around game with a pair of groundballs and two caused turnovers. Tristan Earl (Millrift, Pa.) and
Dylan De Meo (Franklin Square, N.Y.) each finished with an assist with freshman
Anthony Kearns (Clinton, N.J.) leading the team with six groundballs.
Jordan Cooper paced Union with six points on the strength of four assists and was one of six players with at least three points in the game. Patrick Regan won seven face-offs to lead Union, while Quinn Helmig picked up seven groundballs.
Senior
Christopher Doerr (Pleasantville, N.Y.) finished the game with nine saves in just over 46 minutes of work, with
Eli Laikin (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) coming on to make dour stops in just over a quarter of action. Union used three goalies in the game, with Graham Goldhelm making a team-best five saves.
Union closed the night with the advantage in shots 52-25, shots on goal 33-12, groundballs 41-27 and face-offs 19-7. Mount Saint Mary went 16-for-19 in clearing chances and scored twice with the man advantage.
Wednesday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary back to the .500 mark at 3-3 overall on the season. The Knights return to action on Saturday when they travel to Misericrodia. Face-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
