Kayla Cleare (West Hempstead, N.Y.) and
Elizabeth Limonta (Stewart Manor, N.Y.) each posted double-doubles and four Knights scored in double-figures as the Mount Saint Mary College Women's Basketball team won its 13
th straight game with a 70-63 road win at St. Joseph's-Brooklyn Tuesday evening.
Mount Saint Mary got out to a quick 6-3 lead on Tuesday following a
Jordyn Hellpap (Hackensack, N.J.) jumper early in the first period, but after the Bears knotted the score at 6-6 did not lead again in the opening stanza. The score would be tied two more times in the first period, but the Bears used a Kellie O'Neill three-pointer in the closing seconds to grab a 21-16 lead after 10 minutes.
St. Joseph's spread its lead to six points in the second stanza, before an 8-0 run from the Knights saw them grab their first lead since 6-3. Cleare netted four points over the run, including a pair of free-throws that moved the Mount in front 27-25 at the midway point of the quarter.
The lead changed hands three times over the last five minutes of the half, before the Bears put together a 5-0 run capped by a Samantha Wilber three-pointer to take a 35-30 advantage. The Knights answered with the final four points of the period, including a
Jessica Rini (Seaford, N.Y.) jumper, to climb back to within 35-34 heading into halftime.
The Knights finished the first half 14-for-43 from the field overall, but went 0-for-7 from three-point range. The Bears hit six triples in the first half, including a 3-for-5 effort from Victoria Porcasi who led all scorers with 13 points at the break. Cleare led the Mount scoring attack with 11 points on 4-for-10 shooting prior to halftime.
Cleare gave the Knights the lead back early in the third stanza, but the lead changed hands five times after that with the Bears surging in front 44-40 on a Kelly O'Donnell three-point play with 5:27 left in the frame. St. Joseph's grabbed a 54-47 lead on an O'Donnell triple with 2:25 left in the third before taking a 54-51 lead into the fourth period following a Cleare lay-in and a pair of
Bridget Kelly (Farmington, Conn.) free-throws.
Trailing after three quarters, the Knights stifled the Bears in the final frame, allowing just two field goals. The Mount evened the score at 58-58 on a Kelly conversion and after a Porcasi triple lifted the Bears in front 63-62 with 2:12 left, the Mount did not allow another point the rest of the way. A pair of Cleare free-throws moved the Knights in front for good in the game and four free-throws over the final half minute sealed the victory.
The Bears hit just three triples after halftime, while the Mount outscored the Bears 12-7 from the free-throw line. Kelly scored 10 points after halftime for the Knights, going 2-for-4 from the floor and a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line.
Cleare closed out her double-double with a team-high 19 points on 7-for-18 shooting to go along with a game-high 15 rebounds. She added three assists and a blocked shot in the win. Limonta came off the bench to produce 14 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots.
Kelly scored a season-high 13 points off the bench for the Mount on the strength of a 9-for-10 effort from the free-throw line with Rini adding 10 points and eight rebounds to the win.
Lyndsay Pace (Cranford, N.J.) swiped three steals and chipped in with four points and two assists.
O'Donnell led St. Joseph's with a game-high 27 points, with Porcasi adding 17 for the Bears. O'Neill led all players with four assists with Taylor Raccuglia producing eight points, six rebounds and four blocked shots.
Mount Saint Mary shot 32.5-percent for the game, but outscored the Bears 42-12 in the paint and 24-8 in the second chance points.
At 19-5 overall and 16-1 in Skyline Conference play, Mount Saint Mary finishes off the regular season on Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. tip-off at Sarah Lawrence.
